please welcome mitch stewart.[applause] >> thank you all very much and thank you for the gracious introduction and for putting this conference together and for all the folks here participating. as roger said i did start on the campaign the third week in january of 2008, i lived in iowa for a. then travel to a number of different states, nevada, minnesota, texas, indiana and then spend about six months in virginia which was a truly gratifying experience. there are a number of things that we learned during the campaign that i think because of the president's unit background as a community organizer helped instill in us a new way to reach out and talk to people of bella lipitor campaigning -- electoral campaign and that is that people matter and all too often in campaigns people are paid less service but they are not taken seriously so we have a model on the campaign, respect and already includes and we took every person's point of view very seriously, their efforts, their sacrifice, and we fell into that empowerment

senator mitch mcconnell said it would be the end of private health care as we know it. guest: i do not think so. in the marketplace people will find ways of providing good insurance at a low cost, but there is a competitive aspect to it with the public health plan that would drive health care costs down in general. in other words, there would be competition, a public auction, if you will, that might be similar to medicare. people would be able to choose that vs a private option, depending on the benefits that they think they can do. i think that kind of competition is healthy. there are probably large areas of the country, particularly rural areas, where the private insurers would not offer coverage. because, remember, they do not have to offer coverage if they do not want to. in those places, the public plan would be sort of a back up to make sure that people do have at least one option. host: the president talked yesterday about making payments, making sure that doctors are paid for the service given rather than tests that are administered. guest: there are various wa

>> senator mitch mcconnell, what's on your summer reading list?> well, i just finished a couple of books i would highly recommend. john mecham's biography of andrew jackson, which is fairly recently out. it's a fabulous, sort of different look at andrew jackson from previous biographies that i've read of him and i've read several. it really focuses mostly on his presidential years and also a good deal about his personal life, how important his family was. his wife died right after his election and so was never in the white house. but he had a collection of relatives who served as advisors and sort of supported him and this really delves deeply into their relationship with him and also the infamous -- what was commonly referred to as the peggy eaton matter, which was the wife of one of his cabinet members who had been maligned similar to the way his wife had been maligned during the campaign and he defended her and made it into a really big issue. so, you know, meacham's a good writer and it's a good read. i also finished a book actually since then

mitch you said that there were three principles guiding the effort by organizing for america. there is a larger coalition called health care for america now which is laying greater emphasis on the need for a public plan. and we've taken the responsibility for getting members of congress to 12e up to that one. it's in the plan that obama campaigned on. it's certainly aims at controlling costs in the way that he's made at a priority. but my guess is organizing for america decided that they needed...
