>> that you are sort of the same and i think mitch would agree with this. the number one thing a good leader, we have diverse parties. he has a susan collins and ted cruz. we won't say rand paul kentucky. i have bernie sanders and joe mansion. and i think what makes us most successful and helps us represent broadly all of america is to try and create unity in our caucuses. i really endeavor and each of us, it's a very interesting moment. i think it's one of the highlights of being senator. every tuesday we have caucuses. it's within our own party, but they are really open discussions, less frequently than you think, what happens in these discussions leaks out so people are quite candid. and i make an effort to tell my caucus that we have to understand each other. we may not agree with each other on every issue, but if we could work together in a unified way and that applies within the democratic party and between the democratic and republican parties, we do a lot better. so the role of party as a unifier in a certain sense, in a divided and fractious countr

mitch is an appropriator. that we can do appropriation bills throughout this year and the next where genuine bipartisanship happens every day. we have proven that the senate can function when the -- when both parties work in a bipartisan way and endeavor for compromises. this week, the senate will have an opportunity to build on that progress. the senate is poised to take up one of the most contentious issues, immigration. to his creditll has promised an open process that is fair to both sides. democrats and republicans are laboring to find a bill to protect the dreamers and provide border security and garner 60 votes. it will not be easy. we are all going to try because of the gravity of the issues at stake. we know this week will be a test of whether the senate can steer the ship through the stormy as the waters. i believe it can. we have shown the senate can lead before, and it must do so again. the president is the president. that has theate potential to act as a beacon of stable leadership and progress in

on the senate side today, also notable that about three hours into nancy pelosi's speech, mitch mcconnell, the republican leader, and senator chuck schumer came to the senate floor to announce the end of negotiations and agreement on a deal, a two-year deal raising budget caps under the budget control act of 2011. and expanding the budget through 2019. so the house yesterday passed the continuing resolution, that short-term measure through march 23. it's the senate's turn now and now they will further consider the budget resolution, expanding, as we said, spending for some $300 billion through fiscal year 2019. we just have 15 minutes or so here. but we did want to show you the comments of the majority leader, chuck schumer, of the majority leader mitch mcconnell and chuck schumer, one quick tweet before. that the president has weighed in at the very end of nancy pelosi's speech this afternoon. about the budget agreement. saying the agreement today is so important for our great military. tends the dangerous sequester and gives secretary mattis what he needs to keep america great. republic

what you saw before senator paul started speaking was senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and senate democratic leader chuck schumer come to the floor and essentially do something that was a little bit choreographed. senator schumer making clear if senator paul gets an meantime i have a lot of guys that have problems with this deal, too they're going to want amendments. what they were trying to say there is given the deadline, given how this deal came together, they're not willing to open up the bill as it currently stands for any type of amendment, that would just kind of create a major problem. with that being said, if leaders as they currently plan will not give senator paul that amendment vote, wolf, we are very clearly on the path toward a government shutdown. how long will it be? that's a great question. because the senate right now i'm told has the votes to actually pass this deal. right now this is because of the time limits of senate rules. but it's very clear, if senator paul sticks with where he is right now, and by every account he plans, to we will absolutely cross that
