so the idea of a chris christie candidacy or sarah palin candidacy or mitch daniels candidacy, all they find intriguing, because they say, look, we've got four or five months until we vote, six or seven months until my state votes, lets them go at it and see how they do. >> sean: i agree. rick perry jumped into the race and went to the top of the polls. by all accounts conservatives weren't happy with his position on immigration. you advised him to sort of modify his position on social security, and the use of the term "ponzi scheme." >> i'm not -- let me be clear. i'm not adverse to the use of "ponzi scheme." i wouldn't use it, because ponzi scheme is a deliberately criminal enterprise, but i get what he's talking about when he talks about a sonny scheme, which is unsustainable. my concern is, when he said in his book, by all measures it's been a failure, he alludes to it perhaps being unconstitutional, and says the federal government has no role, it ought to be turned over to the states decide. what happens if your state says we're not going to have a social security system? what happ

we had one month of mitch daniels. we had mike huckabee. we have sarah palin running all over the country in buses pretending she is sort of maybe not running. now chris christie does what over governor of new jersey does. gives a foreign policy address at the reagan library. come on. we have a bunch of candidates there who are real people who are running, do them the service of paying attention to them. if you are not going to run get out of the way. >> bill: do you think voters would hold it against chris christie if he did run and bailed on the state. do you think that would be hold against him as some voters hold it against sarah palin who resigned her governorship in alaska? >> well, the history is on the side of running. bill clinton promised the voters of arkansas in 1990 to serve out his term. and he carried arkansas when he ran. it would be three years into his governorship if elected in 2009. it's a four year governorship. the other point is he is probably not going to get reected in new jersey. it's a democratic state. >> bill: i

. >> chris: brother kristol having had his hopes dashed about mitch daniels and paul ryan getting thisis pining away for someone else to get. now his heart has gone to chris christie. two questions, are we being overly harsh on perry? are we writing him off too quickly? what do you think of the chances that a christie or some other bill kristol knight in shining armor gets in the race? >> i cone think we are being too -- i don't think we are being too harsh on perry. what was so strikingly troubling from a republican point of view about this performance perry was thought of as a true conservative. now it appears he has this position on immigration which is anathema to a lot of conservatives. this hurts him with the base. you can't -- look at all the trouble romney had, now perry has the same trouble. his weakness is real. as for whether someone else might get in, you can rule anything out. it is still early. what keeps happening is people have a moment and get in the race as perry did, zoom to the top, everybody is in love. then we get a dose of them in reality and they don't seem so .
