earlier i spoke to indiana governor and purdue university president mitch daniels about the presidentn and what he calls the bankrupt federal student loan system. welcome, appreciate your coming in. you wrote recently for us the student loan policy a flawed concept, botched execution draped in duplicity. strong words. why don't you elaborate on that? >> i think from the outset it was a mistake for the risk on the federal tax payer, none of the schools which are to be like ours, ought to be prepared to stand behind both the ability and willingness of graduates to live up to their debt obligations. i think from the execution you will there's one mistake after another, a huge one was the federal government taking it over in 2010 promising -- here's one of the elements that i think was less than truthful, promising it would earn a profit for taxpayers when it's turned into colossal loss. i think it's one of the most unfortunate public policy endeavors we've seen. not saying it was never a good idea to help young people achieve higher education but there were better ways, more honest ways

neil: tuition, room, board, mitch daniels, president of purdue university, frozen tuition and board at full well when you increase aid to students they only increase the tuition, it goes up exponentially. >> just more powder you can bring to pay for college. who ends up winning? i'm a professor. i like being a professor. if these colleges have not delivered enough value to help the students pay back their loans you should note give them a raise. neil: talking last time, inflation in general a big issue. i still try to get to the bottom of what is in a butterball turkey. but all you know everything is a lot pricier, everything is out of control. >> this is the important thing, even if the rate of inflation comes down a little bit, which might, of course we're building on last year's price increases, all those prices on the shelf are still going to look very, very high to people. neil: way beyond the 8 1/2%, official inflation rate. a lot of those foods, double digits. >> talking the foods that you see in the grocery store shelf, talking rent segments, rent is through the roof right now.

first of all, i'm lucky to be in a state with a guy like mitch daniels that froze tuition for 10 yearsomebody's trying it. two ways, number one, we got to have more choices. its got to be more competitive. its got to be disruptional, post -secondary. i mean, it's the cost of a starter home, if not more, to get through it, and the other place, stu, a better high school education. that is a value and instead of stigmatizing pathways, they give us the jobs we really need, like trade, heating and air, a lot of this stuff that go begging that you'll get paid 30 bucks out of the gate, let's teach real live skills in high school. not everybody is going to be an astronaut or heart surgeon and we need to get better education there so you don't have to spend so much post- secondary. you do those two things, it'll bring it back out of high altitudes of too much money and think of all of the parents that have had a graduate or two back in the basement that are now going to be listening to good ideas that are practical and we've got them back in the state like indiana. we've been working on those t

sadly, the only place that's been focused on is in my own home state where mitch daniels, ex-governor of indiana, froze tuition into ten years. that's getting more value out, and that's why their enrollment has gone way up. with the national debt of nearly $31 trillion, we can't continue to pile on more debt. senator scott and i -- when senator scott and i got here just a little over three and a half years ago, we were $18 trillion in debt. we throw trillions around now like we used to hundreds of billions, and it's on the backs of our kids and grandkids every time we do it. today federal student aid owns $1 .6 trillion in outstanding federal assets. in other words, student loans. the loan program needs to be completely redone so that colleges are motivated to lower costs. this is an excuse to do the opposite. finally, president biden's actions are illegal in the first place. the president doesn't have the authority to cancel all this debt. and i'm hoping it gets taken to court because what does it say, again, for future generations, anyone that makes a commitment to take on debt and
