i worked for mitch landrieu.y, all around the world just talking about how mayors have to lead pragmatically and solve problems. we don't have the ability to run. our constituents see us on the ground, the church, synagogue, mosque, at the traffic lights. we have to be responsive. i think the mayor has a legit shot. that being said we also as a party are suffering from an embarrassment of riches. we have an incredibly strong field. this will push everyone to really step up their game. >> steven, we have the greatest respect and think if he were elected he would be a great president. how do you think he will do in sk stk getting in as a late entry with the crowded field that we have? >> all these candidates have really strong teams. some peoples are being disbanded but so many are still undecided. there's a lot of folks undecided. i think the mayor has a real appeal to people who are left of center, at center and right who might still be looking for a home. he has a pretty serious story of building wealth and then

. >>> joining us now, cnn political analyst david gregory and political commentator mitch landrieu, theormer democratic mayor of new orleans. great to have you both here in studio. we've just heard a lot about virginia and what happened there last night. let's talk about your take on all of this and particularly kentucky where the ruby red state voted in a democratic governor. >> i don't think what happened in virginia was unexpected, as great as it was for the democrats. they have been pushing really, really hard. kentucky, from my perspective, is a different opinion. you had a governor there that really was a mini trump in a state where he was the incumbent and it was a deep red state and he lost. there's no way to count that as a victory for the republicans, and it gives encouragement to democrats, especially since it's mitch mcconnell and rand in the state. as the governor said, all politics is local. there were some issues going on. like medicaid expansion that moved that race a little. >> one thing that's interesting is hearing the governor talk about voter mobilization around gun

joining me now is the former new orleans mayor, mitch landrieu.how are you? it's nice to be here. >> the team says, i don't know when y'all talk that louisiana stuff. we have no idea what you're talking about. >> they can't understand us. it's our own personal language. >> so you've seen this iowa poll? >> i just saw it. >> what's your biggest takeaway? >> first of all, we're moving into another phase of the campaign. we'll have two more debates. national polls have shown biden leading with warren catching up to him. now you're moving into the state by state races. that's an interesting poll because iowa tends to be a bellwether sometimes. every election is ditch. you may see this turn into a four-way race that goes into supertoday. i think it just depends. >> what did you think of last night's big victories? >> i don't think you can paint it other than it was pay big night for the democrats. i think virginia, a state that's been teetering on purple to blue really moved in that category. those were state elections. i don't know what reflection it'
