let me ask you about how then senate majority leader mitch mcconnell actually approached inauguration. how worried was mitch mcconnell about what former president trump might do to disrupt president-elect biden's then inauguration? >> this is fascinating, wolf. first, the context here. donald trump's very last tweet came on january 8th. thats when twitter shut him down. the very last tweet he said for those who have asked, i am not going to be attending the inauguration on january 20th. i thought that was strange. because donald trump never announces anything that far in advance. he wants to build up the suspense and everything else. what you found out is that mitch mcconnell beginning when the members -- when the leadership came back to congress that night on january 6th, started talking to his top staff about how he wanted to get a letter together signed by the four top congressional leaders, mcconnell, schumer, pelosi and mccarthy saying that donald trump would not be invited to the inauguration. and he told his staff that the reason why he wanted to do that is he didn't want to gi

mitch mcconnell, the house minority leader, he voted for this.though he's come under fierce attack from president trump and other republicans. what are you hearing in terms of on capitol hill, how nervous are republicans about the innerfiring squad, mcconnell can brush off criticism, but others are more vulnerable. what happens next? >> well, certainly, a continuation of this party infighting that we've seen for well over four years now. i think it was notable that there were 32, i believe, a number of republicans in the house and senate who voted for the infrastructure bill and only six of them attended the event at the white house. among those six were people susan collins, senator mitt romney, people who are well-known to be moderates by all of their constituents. that's part of their brand. so, you didn't see a lot of the mitch mcconnells goes to the event, even though he was not in attendance, president biden thanked. even though there were a lot of republicans who voted for this, i don't know if that's going to be an issue that republicans

default, and mitch mcconnell, the minority leader, said he would be willing to extend a short extensiont led to the situation where we're in right now, where there is that december 15th deadline to raise the national debt limit. up until now, there has been no real path to avoid a default next month. but mitch mcconnell and chuck schumer just sat down and met for about 15 minutes to discuss a way forward. i am told by multiple sources that they are talking about a way to expedite the process, to allow democrats to raise the national debt ceiling on their own to make it faster. so republicans won't actually have to supply the votes to raise the debt ceiling, but they won't stand in the way to let the democrats do that, because the republicans don't want to be the ones casting what could be a politically toxic vote. republicans have the tools to drag things out if they want to. they're suggesting they don't want to do that. all of this is an indication that the two sides are trying to

it's striking to see biden winning on it and of all people, mitch mcconnell, who was for it after he was against it, coming around saying maybe we're going to fix this thing with biden money. >> right, because if you have ever seen that bridge, it's a very important, very ricketedy bridge that really, really needs to be replaced actually and has needed repair or replacement for a long time, for decades, and everybody knew it and it never got done. so now that it can get done, there should be signs and billboards and maybe loud speakers, i don't know, but it should be made clear that it was president biden who made this possible. and in the final analysis, i think the republican political class may be underestimating the impact of that that can be had if people are told where this money came from as it starts pouring in. that's actual stuff happening on the ground that i can see that benefits me. >> there's another big piece of news i wanted to get your reaction, michelle, and you wrote a lot about inequality and how it intersects with our moment, the wall street markets may be up but

but 19 republican senators, including mitch mcconnell, voted for this thing. and what you could see here is this is why the united front basically every single republican always voting against everything is so important for republicans. because if representative x said it is a secret socialist plan, well, if all republicans voted against it, and only democrats voted against it, if your average voter and you look at it and say maybe it is a socialist plan. but if 19 republican senators voted for it, including mitch mcconnell, clearly that is not true. and what you have exposed here and democrats in addition to having done something really good for the country, have an opening here to really help themselves political because the republicans who voted against this in the house have basically caught themselves out by saying, well, i actually kind of support everything that is in here and a lot of republicans support it. but i didn't vote for it because if i did, joe biden would get a win and that is my big priority, not having joe biden get a win. >> right. >> har
