mitchell himself or the israelis. what we understand is that it is to be one more meeting between mr. mitchell and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu later today. so there is a little bit more room for diplomacy. but it all goes to highlight very difficult issues are for mr. mitchell, who already prolonged his trip. the u.s. is calling for israel to stop all settlement activity, is projects that although there are some reports it may consider it freeze for up to nine months or so. but the palestinians say it is simply not enough, the buildings must just stop. >> how committed to using the united states is to a total freeze? >> certainly what the u.s. has been saying is they want to see a stop to settlement activity. just what the amount of diplomacy we see going on here is perhaps kind of the sort of pressure they are putting on the israeli's at the moment. just to put this into perspective, in these talks are just about trying to get the israeli leaders and palestinian leader in the same room together in n

mitchell met palestinian leaders to discuss plans to restart peace negotiations. the european commission president barraso, who has led the commission since 2004, was the only candidate in the european parliament vote. he will start choosing the rest of the commission. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton says iran must be prepared to answer direct questions about its nuclear program. mrs. clinton said the nuclear issue could not be ignored. it was the main reason why american had agreed to participate in the talks. firefighters have found six bodies inside a burning car in tijuana, mexico. 10 people were also killed in separate shootings in another mexican town, besieged by drug violence. tijuana has recently seen a wave of violence between warring gangs. afghans are preparing for a long wait before any clear declaration on the presidential election. the votes will have to be recounted on the orders of the electoral complaints commission, which has invalidated around 10% of the results on the grounds of suspected fraud. david lloyd has been in the afghan count

jennifer mitchell has details. >> reporter: at a flu clinic in alexandria, virginia, dozens of people were vaccinated today against the seasonal flu. government officials announced they are seeing record numbers of cases of the h1n1 inflnz a. numbers that are unusually high for this early in the flu season. >> 3.6% of outpatient visits are for influenza-like activities. that's much greater than we would usually see this time of year. >> reporter: clinical trials testing the vaccine for swine flu are showing promise. many healthy adults are gaining protection from one dose of the vaccine instead of two. and the immune response is happening quicker than first expected. >> these vaccines are well tolerated and induce a strong immune response in most healthy adults when given in the single 15 microgram dose. >> reporter: a single dose would mean more people could be immunized sooner. that would be welcome news to health officials in texas, who expect to receive more than a million doses a week of the swine flu vaccine, but not until october. >> we are in a pandemic issue. i think there's

you know that senator mitchell is in israel today. today he attended the funeral of assaf ramon, who is an israeli pilot who died in a training mission. we have a special connection to this family because it was his father who was on the space shuttle columbia and that tragically exploded. senator mitchell felt it important that he attend the funeral as well. and course, we hope the memory of assaf ramon's dedicated in honorable service to his country tempers the grief of his family. tomorrow he expects to meet with prime minister netanyahu. he also plans to meet with president of -- abbas. given that they are going to meet tomorrow and discuss all these issues, let's see what comes out of that meeting tomorrow. our policy, of course, is crystal clear on it. senator mitchell, as well over the weekend, met with president pervez, foreign minister lieberman, and defense minister barak and i am told there were positive and productive. >> right, but after this i mean is in this closing the door -- >> i'm not closing the door to anything es
