the state of north carolina, mitt romney won north carolina in 2012. in 2008. it's one of the states romney got back in 2012, and he won it by winning nearly 60/40. they're big in the raleigh durham research triangle, very important to win in a competitive state like north carolina, and clinton with a lead right now. a seven-point lead. mitt romney won by 60/40. the democrat has a lead now among this constituency. you cannot win north carolina if you're getting crushed in this electorate. that was north carolina. a state he must win. it's very similar in a state like virginia, a state that donald trump might have to win. tim kaine, hillary clinton's running mate, is from there. she's had a consistent lead in virginia. she has a lead in north carolina. she has a similar pretty comfortable lead in colorado. what do these states have in common? a very important constituency is college-educated whites. part of the growing population in the suburbs, the research areas, the high-tech areas of all these swing states. a republican constituency in 2012. it has

all of this is about where donald trump needs to make gains, where he could improve on mitt romney ins week brought fresh questions about whether he can even hold the romney states from 2012. and specifically, we're looking at a couple. we got a poll today out of georgia. georgia a state that hasn't gone for a democrat since 1992. poll today puts hillary clinton ahead by four points there over donald trump. how about arizona. arizona has gone for a democrat once in the last generation. it was for bill clinton back in 1996. there's a poll with hillary clinton leading there by three points. so all of this talk about where donald trump needs to flip states from blue to red, well, he's having a whale of trouble doing that right now, but his situation is getting worse, because hillary clinton could be on the verge of flipping a couple of red states. also we've seen polls that have her in contention in north carolina. if she can flip those states from red to blue, you can forget about the rust belt strategy for trump or the florida strategy or any other strategy. if she's flipping a number

we want to look at this year versus last year and ask how is donald trump very compared to mitt romney? we are joined by charles franklin, director of the marquette law school poll who is a colleague of mine. it is always good to have you on the program. let's talk about how trump is sharing. charles: if we look at early august in both years where seeing a clinton 10 point lead right now with registered voters which is four years ago. that is a little bit stronger but basically comparable. mike: are trump and romney showing strength the same parts of the state? charles: there are fascinating changes there. the city of milwaukee the rough of the same. but, in the suburban counties around milwaukee, mitt romney was winning those areas handily four years ago. in the milwaukee area. it is a gigantic change. there are changes in the northern half of the state in green bay and the northwestern part of the state. it was a close race in the green bay area for years ago. now, donald trump is pretty handily ahead right now. where obama had a lead in the northwest of the state is now a dead tie.

after obama beat mitt romney in 2012, he made a big show of inviting mitt romney to the white house to have a private meeting with him to consult with him on some of mitt romney's economic ideas. after the election, president obama went out of his way to praise mitt romney personally, and his past perform ansss, like running the olympics. so barack obama has not denigrated republican candidates for president as unfit or incapable of holding that job. that's not the kind of rhetoric he uses. it's not the kind of thing that he has said against anybody else who he's been in political combat with as a national figure. but that's where he went today with donald trump. >> i think the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. he's woefully unprepared to do this job. and this is not just my opinion. i think what's been interesting is, the repeated denunciations of his statements by leading republicans. including the speaker of the house and the senate majority leader, and prominent republicans like john mccain. and the question i think that they have to ask themselves is, if you are r

improving in this area over what mitt romney did in 2012. that's because have you blue collar white voters there who are more excited about trump than they were about romney. also improvement around the scranton area for donald trump as well. that strategy he has of winning over blue collar white, he is improving on mitt romney standing in those parts of the state. here is the problem for donald trump. right here, southeast pennsylvania. take philadelphia out of it. that's democratic strong hold. four giant suburban counties right outside of philadelphia. together they make up about 20% of the vote. statewide about 1 in every 5 votes cast in pennsylvania is going to come out of here. now this is an area where a republican absolutely has to be competitive in a general election. if you look back to 2012 suburbs of philadelphia mitt romney lost by 9 points to barack obama. romney needed to do a little bit better than that to win statewide. he lost by a couple point statewide. if he improved by a few point here he could have won statewide. look

you were very involved in mitt romney's debate prep. he did pretty well in his first debate against barack obama. what advice would you give hillary clinton as she starts thinking about how to prepare to take on donald trump in the first debate? >> well, debates are like most things in life. the best practice is to have done it. she's done a lot of these now. i think that's really going to help her. going into these debates. everybody has a different strategy. i have done this going back to then governor bush's and it was very interesting, when i did governor bush's debate prep and dick cheney's debate prep, they had very different approaches but both worked for them. vice president cheney loved to have run-throughs at the exact hour the debate would have. george bush hated it. i think to take time is very important. understand this is a very important moment and dedicate the time and focus needed to really get ready for it. i'm sure they are going to do that in the clinton campaign. i doubt they are going to do that in the trump campai
