. >> reporter: mohammed rahami says he had no prior knowledge that his son ahmad khan rahami was behind the bombings in new jersey and new york as authorities allege. when you hear now that he's been accused of this, do you believe it? do you believe it? sir? >> i'm not sure what's going on. >> reporter: you're not sure? >> i'm not sure what's happened exactly. but i think so. it's very hard right now to talk, okay? >> reporter: investigators seized cars and came out of rahami's elizabeth apartment with boxes of potential evidence, a startling scene for people who live and work in this north jersey community. >> terrified. he was hiding in plain sight. >> reporter: rahami shares the apartment with his father and other relatives upstairs from his family's fried chicken restaurant. >> they seemed friendly. they didn't seem like -- no harm would come from them, you know? it's crazy. i would have never expected that. >> reporter: that explosion came hours earlier from one of five pipe bombs found in a trash can at the nearby elizabeth train station. it blew up as a robot tried to disarm it.

ahmad khan rahami and his brother mohammed travelled to pakistan as recently as 2013. in this facebook post the brother talks about experiencing bombings in quetta, an area with a strong taliban presence. another bomb just went off. that's seven bomb blasts in less than 24 hours. w.t.f., he writes. we can't even get out of the house. another photo shows the suspected bomber relaxing in traditional clothing. he had a wife in pakistan, according to law enforcement sources. it is this trip and others to afghanistan that investigators are now looking into. >> as we go forward in this investigation, that's part of what we do. we're going to talk to family, talk to friends, and see what the connections are. this is part of an investigation. >> an acquaintance remembers rahami's family telling him about the trip. >> i ain't see them in a long time. he was on vacation in afghanistan. i was like, oh, all right. >> you got the impression it was an extended vacation. >> yeah. yeah. because of this, it kind of makes sense. >> a bar owner spotted ahmad rahami this morning around 9:

khan rahami's father says he warned terrorist. >> reporter: and what did you tell them? a senior law enforcement official tells cbs news that rahami's father, mohammed, called his son a terrorist during a heated argument at the family's new jersey home, so heated that police were called to the house. but the father later recanted his statement, and the f.b.i. because he was in jail on another charge and had a defense lawyer. today, the foeb said it conducted internal database reviews, interagency checks and multiple interviews of ahmad rahami, none of which revealed ties to terrorism. after rahami was captured during a shoot-out with police on monday, investigators found a notebook spattered with blood and pierced by a bullet. one police source described the writings as jibberish. rahami quoted osama bin laden and the american-born radical cleric anwar rahami wrote about pipe bombs and cooker bombs in the streets, and oppression by the west. he also wrote about wanting to live in peace. investigators are still trying to determine if rahami was acting alone, and they're looking closely at his trips overseas to afghanistan and pakistan. in 2013, raham
