we grew up in the des moines school system. in the des moines school system, we were taught that america is a free country and that in a free country, we have freedom of speech. we understood we did not have wear the black arm band. we understood we didn't have the right to disrupt the school. an armband does not make any noise. it represents a belief, and our belief was that the war in vietnam was wrong. when we got kicked out of school we appealed it to the school board. this is america. our mother and our father -- you see her black armband. i am back behind there somewhere. we all attended the school board meeting, and the school board decided to support the principals. we had been kicked out of school. the iowa civil liberties union which is now the aclu iowa chapter recommended we go back to school without the armbands on so that we would not complicate our case with truancy issues, and that we sue the school system for violating our first amendment rights. we lost at the district court. judge stevenson felt it was a firs

we moved to des moines. he was appointed to a different church, and in des moines, my mother made sure that we had black friends. she became involved with the civil rights movement in des moines and we did have black friends and when we invited them to come to our church, that church also did not want to have black people in it, so they also did not renew our father's contract. at that point, he began working for the american friends service committee and his job title was peace education secretary. speakersas to bring in about world affairs and to basically promote peace. that is the environment we grew up and. -- grew up in. by the time the war in vietnam was building up, it was natural for us to be opposed to it. thanksgiving of 1965, there was a large demonstration in washington, d.c., there were two charter buses from iowa. they were college students from the state university, but there were also other peace activists. i asked for permission to be on that bus trip to go to washington, d.c. and i was abl
