you had the raids last saturday in molenbeek three last saturday.n a sense of concern, of tension, but also the sense of disbelief that again belgium finds itself at the heart of an ongoing terror investigation. because this isn't the first time, the "charlie hebdo" attack in paris led back to molenbeek and brussels. and i think that's why we are seeing such bluntness from the belgian authorities about the imminent threat as they are calling it. and also about the sense that belgium has been this weak link in the war on terror. because, of course, this isn't the first time and you're seeing a sense of scrutiny in terms of what the officials are under and a fatigue, i would call it. and a lot of those who have been speaking here in belgium that really, it is time that the belgian authorities found a way to bring this to some kind of a close. >> can you talk a little bit about the significance of molenbeek, that suburb of brussels where salah abdelslam is from. it's become clear in the last few days it's a hotbed for the terrorists to organize and exe

many people going to al qaeda before 9/11 living in molenbeek.e've seen so many young men from these neighborhoods. on the trajectory is they get involved in street gangs, petty crime, drugs. in fact sometimes they're drinking, promiscuous, all that kind of stuff. then the radical preachers and recruiters tell them you can redeem yourselves by joining isis. it's a way to explain away all this past behavior. the message is they were corrupted by the infidel west. what we are seeing is these youngsters moving to syria -- one official told me, super gangs. all the friends from around the block going together. they know each other when they come back and they are tasked by isis in these cases to launch attacks. they know how to work together. they know how to get weapons and keep things secret. that created a serious threat. >> very serious threat. very terrifying. i think the thing emphasized being there today was how small and intimate that neighborhood seemed. >>> how vulnerable is the united states to a terrorist attack? missed signs by terrorism

>> well, belgium falls into this pattern, if you will, it's a town they have a town molenbeek and brusselshat has been a source of radicals that attack the jewish medium there, that sources for the madrid bombing. the charl"charlie hebdo" bombine from there. >> going to syria out of the 600,000 muslims in belgium, over 500 have gone to syria, 190 have returned and many of them, as you can see, with this cell, returned to use belgium as a platform from which to launch attacks as they did, it appears, with this attack in paris. >> molenbeek specifically. 80% muslim. that town alone. and you mentioned some of the other incidents that have been tied to it. more recently, the train that was coming from belgium to paris, investigators believe that the weapons involved in that, that americans were able to foil came from molenbeek as well. why is it so easy to get weapons there? >> well, it seems that the belgians have a freer flow of individuals. this mastermind, abaaoud talked to the magazine, the most militant magazine in which he bragged about being approached by officers and they looked at a

specifically from one neighborhood in brussels called molenbeek. and that's where this -- where abaaoud is from. he's believed to have traveled from belgium to syria. he claimed in an isis magazine to have then come back to belgium and was part of a cell in a town called verviers near the border with germany. i was actually in that town in january when police carried out a raid on that cell, killing several members and seizing a large weapons cache as well as police uniforms indicatesing they were ready to carry out some sort avenue tack. then abaaoud reappeared in syria claiming he was able to slit through the net of belgian and european intelligence. so if indeed abaaoud made his way back to europe, to france and coordinated this attack, that is not only deeply embarrassing for the european intelligence services but also deeply disturbing because it goes to show what many others like him who have gone to join isis in syria may be able to do. >> and alex, i'm curious. you say it's embarrassing. but also we look at this neighborhood that's right th

amy: talk more about molenbeek. >> so it is a neighborhood where weapons are easily available. amy: why? >> because belgium has been a center for the illegal weapons trade for decades. it's where shipments to conflicts like angola traditionally have taken off. and that commerce has led to the easy availability of weapons. and that is a very dangerous development, because for just a few thousand dollars, you can buy kalashnikovs and other weapons of war on the black market in belgium. amy: were you surprised when you heard about this connection between the paris attackers, some of them, and molenbeek in brussels, belgium? >> i was not really surprised, because i've been working on the syrian conflict for many years, and we have seen many people from these areas of belgium and france heading to fight in syria. and, you know, there's been this focus on this fake passport, when europe really should be focusing more on the marginalized muslim communities at home and try to better meet their needs, make sure that young people are educated and have jobs available, because the reality
