molly hunter joins me now from gilroy, california. what have we learned about the motive behind the shooting? >> reporter: good afternoon. that is still the big question. police have not given a motive. we know that the shooter was a resident of the town of gilroy. he's 19. we know he bought his ak-47 style weapon legally in nevada, not california. police are scrubbing his social media. he's previously posted racial slurs about the right -- white supremacy. they're looking all over his instagram. they're talking to his friends. right now their investigation is not particularly public, but they're reaching out to anyone who might have known him, who might know why he did this. we'll hear more from the police later today at 4:00 p.m. local, 7:00 p.m. eastern. hopefully some of those answers, including the motive might become more clear. >> molly hunter, thank you very much for that update. >>> coming up, padding the resume. new questions about the qualifications of president trump's nominee to take over all of the intelligence agencies.

nbc's molly hunter is following this story for us. molly, good morning. >> guys, good morning to you. on the eve of these raids, that's right, vice president pence has visited detention facilities down in texas. we have video of him reacting as he first walked into those rooms. he said later he expted the overcrowding because the system wasn't designed for this. he's firing back calling on democrats to end a crisis. grabbing onto the chain link fence, detainees shouted to the cameras. no shower, no shower they say. this is what vice president mike pence saw friday on his visit to a detention facility in mccallen, texas. journalists inside described a stench and said men had tears in their eyes. >> we are not terrorists. >> reporter: earlier the vice president visited a new facility built months ago that appears cleaner. >> are you comfortable? are you being well taken care of? i couldn't be more impressed with the compassionate work that our customs and border protection are doing at this facility. >> reporter: overnight tweet that go

nbc's molly hunter is in the earthquake's epicenter, the town of ridgecrest, california. know, residents spent that night sleeping on the sidewalk. how are they weathering all of these aftershocks? >> reporter: kendis, good morning. and the aftershocks just keep coming. the ground hasn't stopped shaking. we were just talking, we were awoken last night to a pretty strong one, 10:30 our time, a 4 4.5. but when you look at the usgs website, every few minutes there's an aftershock. we're in a residential neighborhood and last night a lot of people were sleeping outside on their mattresses. i spoke with a single mother of three, and she didn't know where to go to keep her kids safe enough, so they were sleeping outside in the garden. i just want to show you, this is the house. kendis, you might remember the first night after that 7.1 quake, there was a huge house fire. we came right there. this is what it looks like now, kind of completely burned out. we do know that the owner made it out alive, but she lost everything, including her car back there. we did speak with a couple r

joining us live from gilroy, california, nbc news correspondent, molly hunter for us.ning to you. what more are we learning today? >> reporter: good morning, rig now the investigation is -- right now the investigation is focussed on if there's a second shooter or accomplice. we heard the police give a press conference. and they talked about witnesses mentioning maybe there was a second guy helping this shooter out. here's what happened, at 5:41, one of the biggest, oldest garlic festivals in the country. it's a big food festival, really important to this town. it was the 40th anniversary and at 5:41, the shooter opened fire. now, in a minute, gilroy police say they engaged the shooter and took him down. in that minute, minute and a half, he was able to shoot and kill three people, including a 6-year-old boy and at least 11 other people suffered gunshot wounds and a handful of others suffered by trampling and just the general chaos, got injured, but take a listen to what a couple of the witnesses had to say, how they described the scene. >> a vendor that was getting rea

my colleague molly hunter is in ridgecrest with the latest. s been up all night talking to folks trying to figure out what damage is done. what have you been hearing from folks in the community, molly? >> reporter: david, good morning. we have been up all night talking to a lot of people. everyone has been up all night since the quake. we spoke with one guy who felt the quake outside. warren cooper returned home to his mobile home to find it completely slid off the jacks. the corner completely into the dirt. our crew is at a different mobile home park and they say almost every single home in that mobile home park is unlivable. we spoke with a couple of residents from a town down the road. apparently it was even harder hit than ridgecrest. they said there's no power now. there's no water. we've seen that picture with the crack in the highway. that's from trona. here, though, everyone is a little bit freaked out because the ground keeps shaking. there have been dozens of aftershocks. when we felt the 7.1, david, it shook for about five minutes be

. >> join me now from gilroy, molly hunter. what do we expect to hear? >> reporter: we have a lot of questions. we do know who the shooter is. we don't know his age and where he's from and most of all, we don't have a motive. we do know from police the way he got in. everyone else had to go through a metal detector and a bag check. even for a family food festival. security was tight. the shooter used some sort of tool toll get into the perimeter fence. the other thing from the presser is that he open fire and police had him within a minute and a half. he was so brave and fast that he shot three people dead and 11 people suffered gunshot wounds in such a short period of time. hopefully we'll hear from police how quickly they're able to do that. i know we spoken with eyewitnesss. we had a lot of questions how he was able to get in and did he have an accomplice. not necessarily a shooter but someone may have been supporting him. witnesses said they felt someone was there and a lot of questions. hopefully that press conference is going to get going soon so w

and joe, i was on the air a little earlier this morning and talking with molly hunter who is stayingnd was rocked out of bed by powerful earthquake. and she said that the shaking just kept going and going. and continued with many aftershocks. have you been feeling any? >> reporter: actually the aftershocks at least over the last hour or two have died down. we really haven't felt anything major lately. that by no means means that the threat over. over the next several days or week, the odds of aftershocks are very high, some could be makignitude 5 or 6 and there is one in ten chance that we use see an earthquake that is 7.1 or stronger. so stronger than the one that we have seen so far. as far as damage goes, so far here in ridgecrest, all of the buildings are still standing. there are no reports of any major structural damage or issues november f issues, no fatalities reported. one of the worst things that you see is behind me, the house that caught on fire. there were two structural fires right after the earthquake hit. and neighbors say they looked out their window and saw this hou

i'm joined now for nbc -- by nbc meteorologist bill karins for more and nbc's molly hunter is on the re have been some aftershocks this morning. have you been able to feel anything and what's the word on damage and injuries? >> hey, chris, good morning. that's right. just in the last couple of hours we felt one almost every couple minutes. i was just telling your producer that actually there's a good chance we might feel one in the next few minutes. the strongest ones this morning have been magnitude 5.4 and magnitude 4.1. feeling a 5.4 quake when this close to the epicenter is close. we did feel that 6.4 but i was in l.a. yesterday and it was a rolling motion. it's been extraordinary to be this close to the epicenter and feel them as they go this morning. the damage here has been minimal and this whole town is really feeling kind of relief this morning. there's not that much cleanup. of course liquor stores did get some bottles on the ground, couple libraries had their books kind of tossed answered and yesterday we spoke with a guy who actually, there was a spark in his garage, small
