molly, what can you tell us at this point?reporter: we have heard from a white house official, that president obama has been briefed on this shooting in columbia, maryland. as for the scene here, we saw a number of s.w.a.t. team officials leaving about 30 minutes ago, perhaps indicating they have cleared everybody from the mall. we'll find out when we get an update in the press conference, if there's anybody still in the mall they're trying to evacuate. the assumption by the police, as of 1:00 today, the working assumption is one person came to the mall with a shotgun, shot and killed two people, then shot and killed himself or herself, we don't know the gender or identity or ages every the victims yet, but three people dead, and all three were dead when police arrived on the scene. police believe they have identified which of the three was the shooter because he or she was found near a shotgun or ammunition. there are no other reports of gunfire inside the mall after police arrived on the scene and found those three people de

molly, has the president's position on this issue resonated with his base?ink his base has had a hard time with all of these disclosures, with the nsa stuff, the snowden stuff. in fact, most of the erosion in the president's job approval rating over the course of 2013, which was a pretip us to drop over the course of the year, came from democrats and people who had voted for him. republicans -- people who didn't vote for him didn't approve of him to begin with. but coming off that reelection high, there was a steady decline. a lot of young people were p infuriated with these disclosures. there's a defensive tone to the president's speech. a lot of civil libertarians saying it didn't go far enough. people in the president's party, like the senator from new mexico, saying they would have liked to have seen him go farther, make more commitments. i'm not sure those people are going to be satisfied. >> the president addressed some of the national implications. let's listen to come of that quickly. >> the leaders of our close friends and allies deserve to know tha
