molly ball?alk about far, far down ballot the state legislative landscape for this year, democrats have really gotten their butts kicked in state legislatures for the last couple of cycles. lot of complaints on the democratic side that the party did not put enough resources into these ballot races and that led to the redistricting gains that the republicans were able to make because of course it is the state legislature who draws those maps. currently republicans hold 57 state legislative chambers, democrats only 41. democrats managed to lose state legislative chambers in 2012 despite president obama winning the election. their flip targets looking to take back a lot of the chambers, a lot in blue states like michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, and try to turn that tide, their fund-raising is up about 25% over the last cycle. they think they can finally turn the tide. republicans of course saying in a midterm election not so fast. >> best way to build a bench, win at the state legislature. >> miss

joining me now to talk a little bit more about this, "the washington post" reed wilson, molly ball and nathan gonzalez. reed, i want to start with you. you do a lot of delving into a lot of the state races. it is surprising to me that we haven't seen more mainstream independent candidates because the atmosphere is begging for it. >> it really is. but the fundamental advantage that the parties have is this sort of incumbent structure, the volunteer infrastructure, the getting people to a phone bank, turning people out to vote on election day, that costs a lot of money to build. for somebody like michael bloomberg, if he were to build some national atmosphere, it would take him hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions of dollars to do so. but in a lot of these states just a couple percentage points can make the difference. john tester in both races got less than 50% of the vote and libertarian candidate running won by more than the difference between tester and his two republican opponents. >> terry mcauliffe is governor of virginia with less than 50% of the vote and it helped hi

molly. >> reporter: opening statements are complete and the first witness including the fbiamy took the stand in the trials of the friends of the bombing suspects. the 20-year-old is among several friends of tarznaov that is facing charges. they are both natives of ka zizstan. they are accused of removing items several days after the last year deadly attack including the back pack that had fireworks and explosive powder and lap top computer. in opening statements, prosecutor said these actions were taken after seeing the photographs on the news along with his brother's image as a massive manhunt got under way. the young man agreed to dispose of the back pack to protect their friend that was a suspect in the marathon bombing. he told them that it was good to die to as a martyr and claimed to know how to build a bomb. the defense attorney paints a different picture and arguing that it the actions showed he never intended to obstruct justice or help the bomber. he never took the back pack or touched it and was really looking for marijuana in the room. he argued that he was cooperative and
