first it was mom and then in his mom's honor. he was out for a training run. and rolled his ankle. and we thought it was a pretty bad sprain but he still ran anyway. he ended up beating me in the race of course. but the ankle never really healed over the summer time. we initially learned it was cancer, in the winter of 2016. sebastian told me all along that his greatest fear was losing his foot. it is hard to describe how proud i am of him. he has come through and overcome so much in his life and this in particular, it was incredibly difficult for somebody his age to deal with not only the cancer treatment but the amputation and not only to come back and his view, in the eyes of others to come back even better. he is competing at a tremendous level. i think sebastian draws his strength from his past experience, seeing what his mom went through, through her diagnosis and multiple treatments, and it was a tremendous resource for his mom seeking therapeutic support and other supports during her diagnosis and it was reassuring to know that that resource was there for us for sebastian.
