mom was a major professional dancer. so they kind of came to seem later as they were adults, partly because of the attraction to winter sports but also it was asocial thing for them . some of their former boyfriends and girlfriends were skaters . anyway, they kept us engaged as kids and we go out to born mountain between christmas and new year's. they would fit us into the preschool with the boys so that afternoon, we would all be together as a family and it was a wonderful time at born mountain so one winter, it still still wasn't in michigan, so friends of mom and dad, they said have you been up to colorado?>> and so we took the trip to vail colorado when it was nothing. i mean, it was one hotel. and the mountains, the snow was a lot more plentiful and god bless born mountain, we never. >> once he went to vail. vail became their second home . they bought a condominium and they would spend summers and christmas there. so as you got older, your parents really wanted you kids be involved with politics and current events.

[laughter] and he said all of you this is how he would type. you would start learning how to hunt and peck but he said you need to write your mother a letter and tell her how much you love her and how special she is. so he went off and did his work and we were typing those letters and then we finish that and run around the halls of the capital and we would get lost and we literally got lost in the halls and have the policeman, where is jerry ford's office? we have our letters and give them to my mom and she opened each one and it was like the first time she'd ever read that and you probably did it, you know, 30 times. and she was eight that was wonderful. she way of sharing the parenting and kind of express our love to mom coming up. >> and that got your dad some good brownie points. i had my mom but that was my wife so, she was my one. it woke me up and let me know at times he had to get yourself together because you are going home at some point in your life so i started, they asked me to do youth challenge. so i said i will try. it kind of really changed my life because i thought people didn't want to hear my story. the younger guys because you guys coming in there 15 or 16 with life sentences. and they did, they wanted to hear my story and it actually made me a better person. so i continued to write the book. anna started making plans when i got out. i knew i wanted something different. and i knew i didn't want to come back again. i had a lot of support through my time of being in there. one is my sister right here. she was with me every step of the way. my mom, my grandmother. she passed maybe the first year that i went in. and that kind of, that was a big piece of my life that was -- she was everything. i knew i could depend on her but whatever i needed, it wants she was gone, that was another insight to say man

first it was mom and then in his mom's honor. he was out for a training run. and rolled his ankle. and we thought it was a pretty bad sprain but he still ran anyway. he ended up beating me in the race of course. but the ankle never really healed over the summer time. we initially learned it was cancer, in the winter of 2016. sebastian told me all along that his greatest fear was losing his foot. it is hard to describe how proud i am of him. he has come through and overcome so much in his life and this in particular, it was incredibly difficult for somebody his age to deal with not only the cancer treatment but the amputation and not only to come back and his view, in the eyes of others to come back even better. he is competing at a tremendous level. i think sebastian draws his strength from his past experience, seeing what his mom went through, through her diagnosis and multiple treatments, and it was a tremendous resource for his mom seeking therapeutic support and other supports during her diagnosis and it was reassuring to know that that resource was there for us for sebastian.
