now, a lot to get to tonight, starting in cairo with ian lee is on the phone and also journalist mona eltahawy who joins us as well. so, ian, we've been watching live video of the protests. you can see hundreds of people near the embassy. we understand they're now spilling into tahrir square with police, egyptian police using tear gas. what is the situation there? what's the latest? >> repter: well, anderson, what we're basically seeing right now is a war of attrition. both sides are dug in. the police aren't likely to push further beyond the embassy, they're there just to protect the perimeter of the embassy. the protesters are the ones now that are going to be squaring off with the police, but they seem to be kind of at a distance right now. it's really who will tire out first. we've been seeing tear gas, rock throwing by both sides, we've seen molotov cocktails, a real battle on the streets, if you will. and these are your hard-core protesters. these are the ones that we've seen over the past year and a half, the ones who are on the front lines of any battle with the police, the most zealou

. >> mona eltahawy, we'll check in with more with you throughout this hour and also our reporter, ian lee, on the ground. we'll talk to you more on the ground. to libya reporting to us tonight from tripoli, the libyan capital is cnn jomana karadsheh. what are you hearing about the killing of the four american diplomats? >> reporter: no reaction yet regarding the reaction by the united states. but, anderson, earlier today, we heard from senior government officials, the former prime minister now of libya and the speaker of parliament holding a press conference, strong condemnation of the attack vowing to bring the speaker to justice, saying this attack coincided with september 11th, believing there was a link there, hence, it was carried out by islamic extremist groups that operate in eastern libya, and saying that libya will not allow the revenge attacks against the west, and at the same time, saying they will need the help of the international community in confronting these groups, people here, anderson, really shocked by what happened. many libyans i've spoken to today are really sad

egyptian blogger and journalist mona eltahawy has been witnessing this and joins us by phone from cairo. mona, i know you were in tahrir square over the last 24 hours. what is the feeling, what is the mood there? >> reporter: i was there in the early hours of today, at about 2:00 a.m. i was not there today and there was -- yesterday there was a street that was closed to block access to the u.s. embassy, which is why the clashes were taking place not right at the premise as they were -- as the protests were on tuesday, but further away. from what i gather from people on the ground today, as you said, more than 200 people were injured and it's a very different kind of protest today than it was on tuesday that first day. on tuesday, those protests were called by right wing members of the movement in egypt and there was very little security and people were very surprised because the u.s. embassy is usually guarded like a fortress. security has been out yesterday and today. i want to emphasize that many of the protesters taking part in the clashes today with police are not just upset about t
