mona kosar abdi was in court today. mona, the last record of quick using his phone was on the same road where his girlfriend livedroad where his girlfriend lived. >> reporter: mark, quick never made it to her home where his family said he was headed that night to check on his daughter. today we learned that his cell phone pinged a tower near turtle creek road which is fbi special agent jason warren testified that one of the defendant sheldon's cell phone pinged the same power minutes before. in fact her cell records that led investigators to his body. another defendant's cell records also place him near the location where quick's body was found the night quick went missing. earlier, we also heard from another government witness, a detective that analyzed text messages between the defendants. he read pages of messages that show the defendants were trying to get rid of evidence, one from mercedes shelton saying, quote, we need to get to montana, asap. the defense will present their case tomorrow. the closing arguments are

mona kosar abdi is in the court room and joins us now live from outside the courthouse. mona. >> noreen, the prosecution today. they say shows that these alleged gang members have been terrorizing the charlottesville area in the months leading up to kevin quick's murder. they say they are affiliated linked to a string of burglarylinked to a string of burglaries, robberyburglaries, robberies and other criminal activity. today, we flared several victims of those alleged crimes. of the six, only four are charged with murder, but the prosecution says uru from danville and anthony stokes both charged with obstruction of justice and racketeering are the ringleaders who called the shotsringleaders who called the shots. the attorneys for both men claim their clients were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. the prosecution says the four charged with murder carjacked quick, kidnapped him and drove around different atms account. they say the group then shot quick, leaving his body out in the woods in goochland county. the trial is expected to go on for several weeks and will

mona kosar abdi was in court as the trial got under way today. >> reporter: noreen, after a long and tedious jury selection process, the trial began with opening statements. prosecutor andrew childress detailed the night of the incident in two timelines. that with norma jean and allen. they intersect between 9 a.m. and 2 a.m. of january 22 home run 2015 when marshal broke into the freeman's home and stole $50 in gift cards after brutally beating the two. childress paints alan freeman as a giver and marshal is a taker and the two had a falling out shortly before the incident over money that marshal never paid back. photos of the blood-stained bedroom where prosecutors say occurred. the prosecution's first witness was a family friend who said alan freeman left a chilling voicemail for her begging for in the nearly two-minute voicein the nearly two-minute voicemail a voice identified as help. you can hear saying mom, you are bleeding. we need to get to you stop bleeding. the defense refused the claim citing lack of evidence and pointing out holes in the prosecution's timeline. the trial

we go now to mona kosar abdi joining us now from appomattox. mona, what do you know tonight? >> reporter: noreen, time in evergreen where the storm caused major damages. i am holding pieces of this look at this. this tree that uprooted. you can see the ground is very saturated and this is what people are worried about. because the ground so saturatedbecause the ground so saturated, trees are toppling over. now across from 460, you can see the traffic is moving very slowly because crews are currently clearing debris and toppled trees from the roadway. over across the street you can see more damage there. the campbell county sheriff's office is to assist the sheriff's office and state police which have been going up and down 460 dealing with this damage. i want to show you the house that probably got it the worst. check out this house. this side of that house was completely ripped off. you can see what looked like the kitchen, what looked like the bedroom. i mean, you could see inside this home. now this isn't the only home that is hit. take a look at this one next to me. an 83

mona kosar abdi is live in out of court, mona? >> reporter: danner, it has been a little over two years since waynesboro police reserve captain was murdered, and today we learned more about the events leading up to the super bowl weekend when police say it happened. after both sides presented their opening statements, the prosecution called their first witness to the stand, vanda quick. kevin quick's mother. gave an emotional testimony by recapping the last day she saw her son arrive. and quick said she and kevin went to the fire department on january 31. they were planning a surprise party for her youngest son. she said kevin told her that night he was heading to ablemarle is county to see his daughter and will be back around noon help her finish setting up. he never made it to ablemarle or helped with the party. the frantic 911 when vanda quickthe frantic 911 when vanda quick. they showed her a picture of his her to identify him. at this point she was sobbing heavily and vanda quick cried out, that is my son laying in the woods.

mona kosar abdi is live outside the studio. what is it looking like outside right now? >> reporter: it feels completely different than it did this morning. beautiful and a lot warmer than it was this morning. this is good news for lynchburg public works who have been working to clear the roads. they had to deal the consistent snowfall, heavy downpours. they had to clear the snow from the drains because they were snow-covered. langhorne is the primary road. they are passable and clear. the focus being shifted to secondary roads. i want to show you what morgan street looks like. that is a secondary residential road. those are definitely going to be needing some work. they're not as pretty as the primary roads. lynchburg public works and they will shift their focus on that today. the sun is going to help most going forward, they are going to make sure those back streets, residential and secondary roads are clear. they will also be focusing to make sure the storm drains are cleared. we will also be looking at overnight freezing, so you want to make sure if you hit any slick

. >> noreen: mona kosar abdi is driving around. what you finding out there? >> reporter: we are driving down word road, which is an example of a primary roads that lynchburg public works has been working all morning. it is in need of a good plow. the road is barely visible. it is hard to tell which lane you're driving in. right now, we're going about 22 miles per hour on a road that is typically a 35 mile an hour road. the crews have been coming down and plowing roads. snowfall, they have not been able to make a dent. in the last hour, we caught up with the lynchburg public works director who told us the plow truck drivers are working on a two-part system. first, they clear the roads and then they add salt for traction. she also tells us that right now we are getting a self-sleet mix and that is making the road slushy. she tells us that is not always a bad thing. >> we are thinking if we leave a little slush on the street that that might be better when it starts. if we get freezing rain, it will get people a little bit of a grip. >> reporter: they will be wor

mona kosar abdi is with the folks cleaning up in appomattox county right now. mona. >> reporter: danner, i'm standing in the part of evergreen that was probably the most hardest hit by yesterday's tornado. take a look at brendan murphy's home. it has been reduced to rubble. right now, they are shuffling through the debris seeing what they can salvage. she said the family was not home at the time the tornado came through, but there were two dogs inside they were able to rescue. they are also looking for any pictures. she said the family recently took a trip to disney world and it meant a lot to them. they were able to save those pictures. it has been a wild scavenger the kitchen sink is over here. there is furniture back there. there are teddy bears the kids used to play with. not everything belongs to them. it doesn't help it is still really windy out here. some of the stuff is being blown to the other side of the field. some other people's properties being blown onto this field. definitely, a long road ahead. right now, they are just thankful family and friends

mona kosar abdi is live outside mona, jury selection took more than three hours. >> reporter: danner -- danner, on the second floor of this building, the judge questioned 42 potential jurors. after three hours asking them questions like, if any of them were related to the defendant or the victim, but things got tricky when we asked if any of them had seen or read any media coverage on this case. that question alone eliminated 18 potential jurors after those individuals stated that they had already formed an opinion on edward marshal jr. at the end, the judge was able to see the 12 jurors, three men and nine women, two of which are african-american. those men and women sat through opening statements that the prosecutor sawed alan freeman was a giver and alex marshal as a giver who extorted their relationships. killed nor ma jean and nearly gift cards. the defense refuted that claim citing lack of evidence. you may remember that last week that edward marshal filed a complaint in federal court against the amherst county circuit court after judge gamble denied his motion for a change of

mona kosar abdi is breaking it all down for us tonight in the lynchburg newsroom. mona? >> reporter: danner, the montgomery county commonwealth attorney said today the preliminary cause of death is stabbing, and police also announced charges have been upgraded for 19-year-old natalie keepers. she is now facing a new charge, accessory before the fact in the premeditated murder along with improper disposal of a dead body. keepers will be in court on the new charges february 4. the commonwealth attorney also said that the murder happened last wednesday, the same day lovell went missing. they say the date was wrong on it will now be fixed.

now go live to appomattox where mona kosar abdi is live right now. mona, what are you seeing? >> reporter: danner, the weather conditions are a stark contrast to what we were seeing just 30 minutes ago. if you looked up, you are see blue skies. barely any clouds, and the weather is really warming up here this is not what we were seeing earlier. dark rain clouds hovering over the county. most of the damage east of appomattox and evergreen and that is now -- when you look forward the east where the dark clouds have moved toward. because of the heavy rain we got, some of the rain has backed up into the streets. take a look at this street in front of appomattox county high school. it is quite flooded and most of the cars you seed on this road are parents picking their students weren't allowed to leave. they leave at 3:15 usually, but because of the tornado warning school kept them there. i want to bring in jacob a senior at appomattox county high school. jacob, around 3:15 when you were supposed to get out of school. what happened? >> we had an announcement over the intercom that

mona kosar abdi was in a court room where prosecutors wrapped up their case. live in roanoke. mona, their focus was on the cell phone records. >> reporter: danner, fbi special agent jason warren said several of the defendant's phone records looking at outgoing calls, texts and data from the phone the night that quick went missing and not only did the record place him in the same vincente as quick the night he disappeared as quick girlfriend's apartment where his family said he was headed, but agent warren said they also led investigators to the wooded area in gootchland where they discovered quick's body. cell phone records placed him in the area shortly before midnight that same night. found the phone that placed her at several atm wrz prosecutors believed she used quick's atm card to withdraw money. the defense is expected to present their case tomorrow. closing arguments have been tentatively scheduled for friday so the jury can begin deliberating as early as mondaydeliberating as early as monday. coming up at 6:00, i will tell you about text messages between the defendants
