[ gunfire ] >> reporter: tonight, dramatic shootout involving a sheriff's deputy in the middle of a residential neighborhood outside of tampa. the first shots caught by the dash cam of a lyft driver who made a wrong turn. >> i seen the muzzle flashes and i heard the return fire on him as he ditched behind his car. >> reporter: according to the pinellas sheriff's office, it all began thursday night as deputies searched for a car that sped off during a traffic stop. that investigation led authorities to a home where two men, one armed with an assault rifle, approached a uniformed deputy in an unmarked car. as soon as the deputy got out of his car, the gun battle began. here's mona kosar abdi. >> reporter: tonight, a miraculous rescue near the nation's capital that defieddds. first responders desperately working to save a woman who fell from a metro platform during the evening commute thursday. >> people were coming up the other way crying. >> reporter: officials say the woman had a medical emergency, causing her to fall just as the train was approaching the station. fire department medic ryan denelsbeck was on the scene within minutes. >> i could see she was pretty covered in blood. she is very dirty. it's very dusty down there. >> reporter: rescue workers on their stomachs consoling the woman below. denelsbeck at one point extending his arm out to hold the woman's hand. >> keeping her calm, making sure she didn't touch anything because the train was still energized at that point. >> reporter: once power was shut off to the third rail, rescuers went below, using a metal gurney to pull her out. >> the main thing that saved this patient was the safe haven zone. >> reporter: officials say the woman was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life thre
