they're near the mondawmin mall area and the lexington market area. we have -- this is just something that just sort of mushroomed where protesters basically took to the streets and then confronted police officers who were just basically taking positions of defense and we happened to witness with our reporter kevin lewis caught in the middle of it the protesters then attacking the police with projectiles of all sorts and that has then led to violent clashes and then now we're seeing fires and now arrests. alison: and we're just now hearing that according to officials there in baltimore, that they have decided that the orioles game that's happening tonight will go on as scheduled despite the scenes that are playing out here in baltimore. that's the latest word from there. all of this, though the day started on a peaceful note. on a somber note with the funeral of freddie gray the young man who died while in police custody there in baltimore. all the people who attended this funeral calling for peace, calling for quiet. and then around 3:00 many people

i believe this is closer up to the mondawmin mall area. these are television crews. >> just to update people we have been saying at least seven offers injured. one unresponsive. most have broken gone sbones. we have not heard of anyone injured as a civilian or protesters injured. >> we haven't seen mass arrests. i think we have seen three or four people arrested. you have to remember we are -- what we can from our choppers and hearing from and seeing from video relayed on the ground and reporters not everywhere. they have to worry about their safety, as well. we haven't seen that. it's been unfolding and in a -- i don't want to use the word calm but not an aggressive on all sides and it's not unfolding with the ton of drama. there's been like little skirmishes. the seven police officers we have heard they have gotten to the hospitals. they got to the hospital about 45 minutes ago. and they're all being treated. so no one is still left out on the street trying to get transported. there in baltimore. they were throwing bricks at them at a pr

scott broom is live at the mondawmin mall with more on that part of the story. >> of course mondawmin mall, this was the scene of looting and rioting yesterday. i want to show you some good news behind me. here are guardsmen baltimore city police officers resting easy right now because there is nothing at this moment to react too but rest assured they are prepared. they are dealing with a city today that's both angry and trying to be hopeful. >> if we don't get justice it's going to be star wars coming out [ bleep ]. >> reporter: raw anger. contrast with a sadness. the image of guardsmen with assault rifles on baltimore streets. >> just to see the introduction that happened within our community, this is a community that i've lived in for 50-something years. just to see the devastation that took place yesterday, it was all unnecessary. >> reporter: but many residents today wouldn't stand for it without a fight hundreds coming from all points of the city to form ad hoc brigades to clean up and take the city back. >> we're just picking up the pieces. we're putting our city back together.

we took the corner back as we taken sustained mondawmin mall.ught other resources that moved from the south, to pence, and pushed in a westbound direction as we saw more looting taking place just west of that area, as we moved, a large contingent, we had police officers moving in that direction. i was very pleased and surprised that we had ministers come out. congressman elijah cummings tried to calm the young people in that meeting, who were totally destroying the places where they have to live. tomorrow they have to go to the same stores and the same infrastructure where they need to survive in the next coming months. after that we had trouble at lexington market and responded, approximately about 50 officers -- excuse me it's been a long day. 50 officers to the market where we secured that and did not sustain much damage. we then got calls off the 1700 block of monument that we had looting there. we responded with multiple units there to sustain that area. we responded with a number of signal car fires and street fires, basically in pennsylva

the violence be gan around 3:30 at mondawmin mall. hurling rocks and basically everything not nailed down at offers. seven officers have been injured. the rioting has quickly spread across the city. groups of teenagers have moved through stores. we know at this point seven officers have been injured. a lot of these officers suffered very serious injuries with broken bones and hospitalizations. at this point police are asking parents to get their kids off the streets and bring them home. >> we're also hearing from prince george's county police that they've got 30 officers in the area of mondawmin mall. these are scenes from earlier when those protesters were throwing just about anything they could get their hands on at police. several of the prince george's county police officers were also hit with rauxz and received minor injuries. it's not clear at this point whether any of them were transported or whether they received any medical treatment. prince george's county police have officers in a rescue vehicle on stand by in case they're

starting at mondawmin mall. students congregate there a lot.t of students have the bus stop there. it is not unusual for that type of thing to go out and usually nothing really comes of it. but by the time i got there, around maybe 3:20 p.m. or so there definitely was a gathering that was definitely about to take a really bad turn. you know, i walked into -- students, i believe they were students because they were very young, of the school age, and the police commissioner just said they were students. but they were hurling rocks, cinderblocks bottles, anything that could be thrown at the police, and more police were coming to the scene as well as more residents and students from the neighborhood. so the crowds were swelling on both sides. and you know it really just kind of escalated from there. you know, spilled over into the side streets, you know, mace was used to get the crowds back as was tear gas at another point. as i'm sure a lot of people saw, i saw another officer pretty badly injured who had been hit by something, maybe a cinderblock

last hour here from this helicopter that was over this area, which we believed to be around the mondawmin mall not too far away from where the funeral was held earlier today for freddie gray. that 25-year-old who died after being taken into custody by baltimore police. that happened jus not too many hours ago. and then right after that about 3:00 today we did get a tweet from the baltimore police saying they were concerned about threats. against the police department and against officers. two hours later, exactly at this moment 5:01 p.m. eastern time violence has erupted to some degree there in this area. we have seen some looting. live pictures again coming out of the downtown area. joining us now is nbc's brian mooar, who is with us -- brian, can you hear me? >> reporter: yeah, richard. we just finished speaking with billy murphy the attorney for the family. he says that this is the gray family's nightmare scenario. this is exactly what they don't want to happen. he made an appeal to the people out there to stop what they're doing. he says it is counterproductive. it is not helping anyo

this is what people are seeing in that neighborhood by mondawmin mall. it's calmed down a little bit. not as much chaos happening there. but this is a disturbing video we just saw in that neighborhood. a gentleman assaulted as he walks towards that crowd there. very unruly situation. and earlier today, they mentioned the response moving downtown. baltimore's office of emergency management tweeted earlier that they are seeing this pack of aggressive youth head down towards downtown. we know that they're going to be met with resistance from pastor bryant's crowd but in addition they've started to station assets around city hall and the war memorial building which is directly across the street. you see now a perimeter of police officers guarding the front of city hall and stationed in the entire square section around that entire complex. it's a widespread area, two blocks in front of city mall and open area and they are stationed and ready to take on anyone who comes in that direction, as they said guarding those assets and also want to show you this video

i saw that the damage that was done to mondawmin mall and it breaks my heart. those from baltimore know how hard we fought for those resources and those stores to bring good quality products items to our community and to have those stores destroyed, mom and mop stores destroyed senselessly. they are working to recover. i also visited lexington market where vendors are desperately trying to get back to normal in dealing with the damage that was done as well. i want to sincerely thank the baltimore city police department and i want to thank all of our other law enforcement officer who is we have had in our city over the past week. commissioner you're going to have to give all of the counties who have been here because i can't remember but i know that several counties in maryland they have sent us resources over the past week and they have been extremely supportive and i'm very grateful for that. and i also -- i should have started here but i'll end here. i want to thank the members of the community, not just the ones that you see here behind me but the ones that

the area of north avenue and pennsylvania pretty close to that original scene at the mondawmin mall. these people basically trying to crack open the gate and peel open to get into the pharmacy before police arrive on the scene. we're talking about a giant police response here. lines and lines of police. several dozen deep and several in this area. this is up in the area near the maryland zoo that has been closed since 3:00 to make sure none of their guests are injured or out of the way. this is how we know it's getting serious. this line that you can see is a line of officers stationed by this area right here. this is lexington market on the approach to downtown. they've basically set up a human wall to make sure that no one gets past that point. lexington market the spot of many protests and rioting on saturday. they are blocking that area to keep anyone who was heading to downtown. leon: i want to cut you off for a quick second. we want to call attention to the scene that's playing on the right of your screens, folks. this is what we believe is a liquor store in baltimore and we've

i grew up in this city about half a mile from where all of this started at mondawmin mall. the resources that we have today with the national guard, maryland state police local police department i think we will prevail. i really do. i think we'll get ahead of this and we'll be able to deal with the small uprising later today. >> sure. the cops have admitted they were not ready yesterday yet they went to mondawmin mall and the kids pushed them back. was that a mistake? was that show of force a mistake yesterday? >> well it really depends on the level of intelligence that they had. there were a couple hundred officers initially deployed there. i was on the scene there and, you know they had enough officers to form a line a line which would be used for moving the crowd and in a particular direction. however, they didn't have any arrest teams at that time. these students came from everywhere. hundreds of students came from local schools and schools nearby and the police were just overwhelmed. all they could do was stand ground hold the ground that they had until reinforcements

the kids decided to meet at mondawmin maul at 3:00. at 4:00 is when the police pushed them down south to north avenue. i was right in the thick of it. >> let me say this. we have video of all of these people throwing rocks at police officers. we have videos of all of these people looting these stores. i would expect that as somebody that works in government that you would support the idea of identifying each and every single person that was lawless in the last couple of days and arresting every one of them. do you support that? >> sean totally. that makes total sense. at the end of the day, no matter what cause of your actions, you should be held accountable. the folks who have been looting or burning up private property it's critically important we address that we go after that. this is something that can't be sustainable. we can't see this ever again in the city of baltimore in our history. we must attack it. >> my last question -- >> but again, we've got to stop talking about the what and focus on the why, once we de-escalate the si

the national guard showing a very strong presence this afternoon at mondawmin mall. that is the location where teenagers started the rock throwing on monday that escalated into the looting and burning that we saw. there have been some protests around town today. a peaceful protest led by a group of pastors in downtown baltimore saying that they want to get the focus back on the freddie gray investigation. now, we hear that governor larry hogan is giving a live press conference and we want to go to him on hear what he has to say. all right. we lost the hogan signal there. what we wanted to tell you is we've been seeing a lot of peaceful protests today. folks are saying they want to get the town back to normal but they're also telling us that simmering just underneath is that tension that can turn at any second to violence. >> the next question that has to be is the rebuild. how do we do the rebuild? >> hopefully we get some results. hopefully we get some rest. whatever happens happens. i can't do nothing about it! brad: well back live now. you can see one of the guard

bill: governor larry hogan went to the mondawmin mall you saw in the pictures. he's at the mall at the moment and will hold a press conference at noon eastern time. there is a story crossing when they were asking him about the response the state gave and the city gave. he says he was waiting for the call for the mayor and waited until he got that call. once he did all the other across had been put into place. rod wheeler was here to see a lot of it. you were out at 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday and worked until 3:00 earlier today. how did this go from what pea pared to be rather peaceful. skirmish here and there depending on the day but largely peaceful to what we saw last night. >> the funeral ended at 2:00, 2:30. then a tweet went out on social media where all these kid met over at mondawmin mall. it was 34 to 3 police officers. -- to 36 police officers. and when i got here the police were running away trying to save their own lives from a bunch of kid. they went for the cvs. i was assistanting there in front of actual all these businesses and people were go

and we'll purge the city from mondawmin to downtown and kept getting it on facebook on twitter, kept getting it on instagram and so we immediately reached out and we found out that it was true and accurate. the police probably met the demonstrators with 50 to 70s officers and armored tanks and basically pushed the activity south on to the street which is a main east/west thoroughfare called west avenue. the protesters took it completely out of hand when like i said i was stuck, i saw police cars windows bashed out and it really continued for hours. and again, unfortunately, you know that time period of about ten minutes of all the events that have taken place over the past two weeks is going to really overshadow all the productivity that's come out of folks trying to really exercise their right and movement. >> if you can stay with us i want bring back cedric alexander, also from los angeles, the former chief of police bernard parks. what's your reaction when you hear the city councilman make those points bernard? >> something evidence in many of our cities poverty, lack of education

here tonight we can show you that there's been a wall of police officers guarding mondawmin mall trying to keep looters at bay. one of many areas in this city devastate beside a day of destruction. as firefighters battled battled the enormous flames at his woo warehouse police were mobilizing around the city. 5,000 officers from the mid atlantic region have been requested to help keep the piece in baltimore. chaos erupt the this afternoon hours after freddie gray's funeral a protest that had been planned on social media spiraled out of control almost immediately. some rioters hurled rocks at police officers. others set cruisers on fire and looted stores. smoke poured from a cvs that burst into flames just feet away from where police officers were standing. officers used smoke grenades and pepper spray to keep protesters at bay. at least 15 officers were hurt. two are in the hospital. one was knot knock unconscious. as firefighters worked to douse flames around the city, one rioter was seen puncturing a hose. at a press conference baltimore's mayor stephanie rollings blake called for cal

and we were at the mondawmin mall and i can tell you that the majority and the bulk of that crowd were young teenagers that started this intense rioting that we saw go into the late evening hours. and in terms of resources, there are up to 5,000 national guard troops available. there are 150 new jersey state troopers that governor chris christie has set aside to come down to maryland and maryland state police of course have brought in a lot of officers as well. we've even seen maryland capital police here to assist. the governor telling us around 3,000 -- i should say a few thousand officers and national guardsmen on the streets currently at this hour. when we did ask him about damage estimates, because when you're looking at the city from the helicopter or on the ground it's really hard to get a full grasp of how widespread this is. there are no official damage estimates whether it be for numerical in total overall costs or number of businesses or homes destroyed but there are insurance adjustors combing the streets of baltimore right now trying to get a firm number in place. and ther

then went on to the mondawmin mall. during these visits i saw neighbors working together to restore normalcy to their neighborhoods. we have mobilized over 2,000 volunteers. and this morning, we moved the governor's office to baltimore city where we held a cabinet meeting where each state agency outlined their efforts to assist the baltimore city community. immediately following that meeting, i listened to a group of community leaders who voiced their concerns and provided input on how we can begin the long process of restoring our community. we've been here all day and we will continue to be here until the threat of violence ends. our primary mission, again, is to maintain order and to begin to repair the damage inflicted by the violence and looting from last night. acts of violence and destruction of property cannot and will not be tolerated. baltimore's families deserve peace and safety in their community. but this is far from over. i have here with me -- i'm going to turn the floor over to general linda sting who is
