before all the fear mongering and before all the misleading information begins. if you are serving our country, if you're wearing the uniform of our nation, your health care will be protected and strengthened under president obama's health care reform effort. i yield back the balance of my time. the speaker pro tempore: for what purpose does the gentleman from louisiana rise? >> request permission to address the house for one minute. the speaker pro tempore: without objection. >> thank you, mr. speaker. critical to health care are reform is who has the power. currently the pair has the power. ask a medicare recipient if she has the power or the government agency which pays. ask a patient denied a procedure if he has the power or the insurance company which pays. reform must fix what's broken. what's broken is who has the power. real reform gives the patient the power. government already controls 50% of health care spending. by controlling dollars, bureaucrats control care. the president's plan doubles down on government control. it doubles down on what is broken.

we have heard a lot of fear mongering here on the floor of the house of representatives and a lot of misinformation trying to scare voters and consumers into believing that somehow their taxes are going to go up. that's not true. this is a carefully crafted bill that provides lots of exemptions to energy intensive industries, to trade and vulnerable industries that will really make a difference in people's lives. frankly to stand still is to lose. and that's why so many companies like johnson & johnson, conoco phillips have endorsed this legislation. energy intensive industries have endorsed this legislation because they know that if we are going to move forward and stay competitive as a country and if we are going to protect the interest of our consumers and environment, we need a new platform. this bill provides that. i support the legislation and urge my colleagues to do so, too and not listen to fear mongering, i yield back. the speaker pro tempore: for what purpose does the gentleman from florida rise?

there was no arrogance or fear mongering in president obama's speech. he made no threats. he did not talk about an endless war on terrorism. instead, the president called for a new beginning between the united states and the muslim people. he renewed his pledge that america is not and never will be at war with islam. he called for cooperation instead of conflict. he courageously acknowledged the mistakes of the past and called for an end to mistrust. the president marginalized extremists by saying and i quote him, the enduring space of over a billion people is so much bigger than a narrow hatred of a few, unquote. he defended israel's right to live in peace while recognizing the palestinian people's right to a state of their own. on iran, president obama urged diplomacy and reiterated his call for a nuclear-free world. and he advocated for democracy, for religious freedom, economic opportunity and the rights of women and girls. madam speaker, everyone listening to the speech had to be inspired by the president's eloquence and good well, but the president also acknowledged

i do not know where war- mongering comes in. i was against the war in iraq and thought it gave excuse to the warmongers in the region, including those like ahmadinejad. it created a mistrust of the possibility of any form of democracy in the region, including in palestine. so, you have to understand that our own cry for freedom implies allowing other people to be free. they go hand in hand. freedom is not an american entity. it is a universal entity and the same way that the tortures and abu ghraib for not the products of certain people, but a tragedy that belonged to america. host: this is an e-mailed question. guest: i believe that democratization in one area will lead to that in another area. i do not believe we can bring about democratization by foreign invasion. that has a danger of bringing all the violent elements, not only within the country, but within the region. i hope in coming years we see change were both iraq and iran as well as other areas will become more democratic. host: mike is next on our independent line fr

will try to scuttle this opportunity no matter what, who will use the same scare tactics and fear mongering that has worked in the past. who will give warnings about socialized medicine and government takeovers, long lines and ration of care, decisions made by bureaucrats and not doctors, we have heard this all before. because these fears tactics have worked, things have kept getting worse. let's begin by saying this, to you and to the american people. i know that there are millions of americans who are content with their health care coverage. they like their plan, and most importantly, they value their relationship with their dr.. they trust you. that means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise. to the american people. if you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your dr. period. we must not let the scare mongering about the possible consequences of a public option deter us from doing what the american people overwhelmingly want and need. it is time to put the health needs of the american people -- not the insurance companies -- first. it is time to move past the partisan bickering and make sure that the health care reform passed by congress includes a real public option. it is the right thing. it is the smart thing. and it is what the american people want and they deserve. mr. president, i yield back the floor. a senator: mr. president? the presiding officer: the senator from south carolina. a senator: i ask unanimous consent to speak for 15 minutes. the presiding officer: is there objection? without objection, so ordered. mr. demint: thank you, mr. president. it seems that you're always stuck with listening to me. i apologize for that. i want to respond to my colleague's grand design of our new health care system in just a moment, but i'd like to back up a little bit and discuss health care and some other things in context. there's no question in anyone's m
