monica gandhi joins us now. dr., cal osha is talking about mandating masks at work unless every employee is fully vaccinated. different from the cdc guidance on the indoor mask wearing. which one of these do you think seems right? >> the cdc mask correct, and why is that co may 13th, and i know we weren't ready for it and i think waiting a month was absolutely appropriate, that with the cdc mask guidance as if you're fully vaccinated you don't need to wear a mask inside or out and actually, the unvaccinated would wear a mask until the case rates were so low that they are no longer at that risk for infection. the cdc says about to come over 300,000 people is a very low level of transition. with and at that rate for almost a full month and they are right, that vaccinated people don't need to wear masks. there's nothing magical about a mask. the magic is the vaccine. >> because we hit that rate and held it for quite a while, that is the key, holding that low rate? >> right. that is the key. that is the most importa

monica gandhi join us in a minute. but let's lay out exactly what's happening. in most settings, there are no more capacity limits for businesses or most types of gatherings. the same thing goes for physical distancing, no longer required. we haven't said that ever. we should note individual businesses can set their own capacity limits but no more orders by the state. here we go with the masks. if you see a mask you got to wear it, if you don't, you don't. mask rules will be changing tomorrow. if you've vaccinated, there are a lot of places you don't have to wear those masks anymore. places like the grocery store, safe way, trader joe's, restaurants, shopping malls or gyms. if you're not vaxxed, you still have to wear them. and businesses have the option to require them regardless of your vaccination status. how do businesses feel about this? in danville, many say they'll allow customers to go maskless while others say they're sticking with masks for everyone. >> we're right down touching people's feet, touching their shoes. we want to make sure everything's sti

let's welcome back to the show tonight, dr monica gandhi and infectious disease doctor there at ucsfpleasure to see you a doctor. will it be business as usual here in california? come the 15th. you know, i think there'll be two major differences. one what you just reported on as we will be doing testing for a new virus. essentially the stars kobe to covid virus. when we go into the winter will be tested in like rsv like influenza. there'll be places that have not as high vaccination rates that we will have to treat covid. but yes, i mean this kind of level of population immunity means. business goes back to normal and it should. there will be still masks around, and that will be have to be sorted out over time. right now. the rule is, um vaccinated. people don't have to wear masks and unvaccinated do you mentioned about the testing sites closing, but you also mentioned that testing efforts will continue. why is that still important? you know, we don't think that we're going to eradicate this virus, but what we've done is created a situation where it becomes a routine low love are low

ucsf disease expert dr monica gandhi, doctor thanks for being back with us, thank you.are you on board doctor with this recommendation that all residents vaccinated or not where mass and public indoor spaces there in l. a county. am not. i actually think the cdc is right. um and what they said on may 13th, which is that vaccinated people don't have to mask indoors, and nothing has actually changed and that's what's really important is the delta variant is still completely responsive to the vaccines. we have antibody data. we have t cell data with b cell data and real world data from the public health foundation in england. that the vaccines work against this variant, so nothing has actually changed in terms of meeting to vaccine indoors. you know what dr this tells me, though, is that health officials at least down south in l, a county that know that this delta variant is serious in that getting vaccinated as you mentioned is also serious. just looking at the numbers of 123 delta variant cases in l, a county 110 are people who have not been vaccinated. in fact, the l. a

monica gandhi, the noted disease specialist said that the biggest mistake that california made was not sending our schoolkids back into the classroom because it's causing a lot of mental health issues. do you agree with that? >> i think that we in the bay area have been advocating for schools to be open for a very, very, very long time. and you know, if we could roll it back and find -- have found a way to keep schools open, while everything else was completely -- everyone else was shelter in place, then you know, that would have been great. i had hoped that we would be able to get schools back in the fall. some were opened. many were not. i think that there's a number of reasons for that. but looking forward, there is absolutely no reason for schools not to be fully opened, for in-person learning, at every level, every school in the fall, period, full stop. really important for our kids. >> i was saying, i don't think i've seen you without a mask in 15 months. it's nice to see your full face. we appreciate your time tonight. >> thank you. >>> up next, why aren't more people coming bac

monica gandhi. good afternoon, thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> what is your take away from this report? >> you know, i think this signal is real. obviously, these are high eu -- higher rates of myocarditis. it is in children, especially in young people, because of the fact we haven't seen 12 to year-old data. we need to talk about standing the durations between doses, giving one does in places with low community transmission until we see the 12 to 15-year- old data, then third is preferring johnson & johnson for those between 18 to 20. we have not seen myocarditis with the johnson & johnson vaccine. it's only 18. >> the possible link we know in the headline will still scare a lot of people. so how can we put this in perspective? >> so the risk is still really low. it is essentially, you know, the risk of getting this rare side effect is still, you know, let's say the benefits of vaccination are high. we want covid to go go go go go there are simple things to be done to likely increase the

monica gandhi. thank you so much for joining us this evening. so let's talk about the transmission of this delta variant. how is it different from the original virus and how quickly is it really spreading? >> the way to think of the delta variant is that the virus is, the strain is more fit and to outcompete any other of our alpha variant or even the ancestral strain and so, it will rapidly, as it has, become the virus that can in fact unvaccinated people. it will not infected vaccinated people because really, your immune system is in a hold up against that delta variant. >> and california's positivity rate creeping up slowly after a low .7%, now 1.2% with months of summer travel and upcoming holidays. should people be taking extra precautions, should we be wearing the masks even though many restrictions have been lifted? >> you know, the way to think of that is that it is likely not the delta variant there yet because less than 5% of our particular variance in this state are the delta. it is more that yes, this was to be expected. if we opened

monica gandhi says the real indicator will come after the economy reopens on june 15th. whether cases stay low? >> there will be mingling. we're going to be watching that carefully. if cases don't go up, that's when you can say, yeah we got there. the way the cdc has made their decision about retesting is to only test if people have respiratory infections not a systematic surveillance testing. >> reporter: unless you have consistent covid flu like symptoms vaccinated people do not need to get regularly tested for covid. we also received questions about anti body tests could that tell you how protected you are. the answer is no. if you've already been vaccinated dr. rutherford says anti body tests just don't work. just a couple of things to keep in mind there, dan. >> very good. steph, talk a little bit about what we know about the failure rate of the vaccine here in california and across the united states. >> so it's very rare, in the u.s. one out of every 11,000 vaccinated people got reinfected with the virus. in california, state records show one out of every 7,000 vac
