monica gandhi joins us now. first, doctor bhati, thanks for taking time. i know you're busy. we wanted to start with why does pfizer try to get emergency use authorization for covid is the shots when the cdc recommendation is that a booster isn't necessary right now? >> it's been a surprising 24 hours based on what you just said because what happened was if there are four large data sets, one from canada, one from the uk, and then one from the u.s. and a much smaller one from israel. and the israel data set show that up to two doses, the pfizer vaccine was not as effective in preventing symptomatic disease, 64% effective, however these larger data sets show 85%, 90% and even 96% in the public health england data set that came out against preventing similar disease. the delta variant looks very well covered by two doses of the pfizer vaccine and there was some antibody data of that nature in new england journal last couple of days. so all that put together a saying we don't see the need for a booster just because it's the delta variant. it's really spreading among the unvaccin

monica gandhi. it is good to see you. >> it is good to see. >> they are talking about the u.s. and us needing booster shots. it should be fairly long- lasting, but what are they looking at except for the bottom line? some skeptics say this about the money. what do you think? >> i agree. i cannot see why immunocompetent people would need a booster given what we know about immunology. we have some really good data that inform memory cells from the mrna vaccine. the go into the lymph node and those memory cells can last 90 years. we have seen and people who have the 1918 flu. 90 years later, they had these cells still active. so, then those cells could release antibodies for various items. it does not seem indicative for immunocompetent people right now. not sure what pfizer's looking up. they could be looking at the fact that they said two weeks ago that there was a 64% effectiveness against the delta variant of the pfizer vaccine in israel for symptomatic covid. but in the uk and canada, says differently. much higher levels of effectiveness in larger data samples. >> what would
