monica gandhi is an infectious disease physician and professor of medicine at ucsf/san francisco generall. dr. gandhi, you've said you will not receive a booster as a healthcare worker because of the global vaccine equity. -- inequity. explain. >> when president biden announced every american should get a booster by september 20 and atlee augt, it was a huge surprise to many infectious disease experts. for two reasons. one is the vaccines are holding up extremely well, pecially in those lesshan 65, against severe disease. th kinda messaging can reduce confidence in t vaccine. the second reason is the incredible global vaccine inequity that the are ma promes made by which countries and the administration at the g7 meeting early june, the rich countries pledged there would be a 2 billion dose donatioto other countrie and that hasn't really been touched in terms of fulfilling that pledge. at high-level meetings like the u. meeting in september, these pledges are made again but we have about six doses for every americans. we have -- that is true many rich countries. and the complete ignoring

monica gandhi. thanks for joining us. think a lot of people were happy to hear that pronouncement from dr. fauci that trick-or-treating was ok because he appeared to suggest we don't know yet if people can celebrate christmas and there is a big hoopla over that. is celebrating halloween actually pretty safe? >> hallowing was likely safe all along. all of the studies have shown us how low the rate of transmission is. halloween is an outdoor event and the trick-or-treatersoutsid. there's careful contact tracer studies and the risk of transmission is one in 10 ny outdoor masks were lifted by the cdc in april, lifted for summer camps over the summer. children can certainly incorporate a mask into the costume if they want, but this year should be the year of the trick-or-treat. kristen: is there a chance the first shots were five to 11-year-olds could come before halloween? >> no. they moved it to november 2 and third. there was this hope it would be ready, but it's definitely after halloween. on the other hand, that makes tha

all right, let's bring in ucsf infectious disease expert dr monica gandhi.k about dr gandhi, masking and astrazeneca. let's start with astrazeneca. now. the company has asked the fda for this emergency use this treatment described as a first of its kind antibiotic treatment. can you help explain to me how this is different from the vaccine and how this could work? yes i mean, essentially what the vaccine does, of course, is make you generate you own immune response to the virus, you know, most of the vaccines involved piece of genetic material, you make it into the spike protein and you raise an immune response that lasts in your body for a long time. that's preventative. that's the best way to combat covid. however what the monoclonal antibodies are are. essentially people who have recovered from covid they purified. they use their what are called their b cells, and they purify these antibodies. and then you give this is either a treatment the monoclonal antibodies or in the case of what astrazeneca is, um, asking for is a preventative monica. a lot of bodi

we are joined live tonight by doctor monica gandhi from ucsf. >> doctor gandhi, as always, we appreciate your time here on kron. 4 news. can you talk a little bit about obviously the big question these parents have. when you know these mandates to get the vaccine for their kids. has the fda moved any closer to. approving full use authorization for the vaccine for kids 5 to 11. >> right. so this actually will not be for a because of what's going to happen first is that november second and 3rd, the fda advisory committee is going to meet about the 5 to 11 year-old. it's likely to be authorized that week and then it could start being given quite soon thereafter. but the mandate that governor newsom prayed, please is always going to be when it's fully approved and it's going to take about 6 months for it to be fully approve say you are talking to a parent who needs more time to look at this. it won't be fully approved until the fda has deemed this as a safe vaccine for children. >> but once it is approved under emergency use authorization. you think of beginning of november. the biden admini
