(applause) >> thank you, monique. and i will try to be brief. you've had a lot of speeches. but i'm just as excited to be here and having heard that song, it really brought back memories as well. just two years ago as you heard, this newly constructed wharf and beautiful space was a thousand feet of closed waterfront. you've heard all the obstructions we had, and had a chain link fence and red tag as we call and was not usable. now it's the center piece of the waterfront. a new public space that welcomes the city to the bay. and thanks to the hard work and diligence of many people. i just want to reiterate, open space is a very important component of the port's planning process for the development of the waterfront and the commission works very hard with the port staff. in the port's waterfront land use plan, our blueprint for the 7-1/2 miles of waterfront, we make a conscious effort to plan and maintain open access for the benefit of our residents and our visitors. and the port now has 86 acres of open space which is

it is incredibly expensive to restore a lot of our piers and monique is the first person to know that intimately and historically but we do have persons and entities that want to continue this fabulous water front experience and to make investments, where there is jefferson street, brandon wharf and pier, 30, 32 and the exporatorium this wonderful opportunity. i want to thank, past and present port commissioners, and i see them here now. that they have earned the title of being the greatest stewarts of our water front and so thank you for your ongoing effort to do this. [ applause ] >> and the work incredibly well with the other agencies. i know that because this is pier 39 and one of the most iconic travel destinations, i understand that is why, john martin was here, because while he flies airplanes he is part of an incredible transportation center and we all know that and we all share in that wonderful experience with being clearly, the best nation for so many, millions of people, every day. and as we do this, we reinvent and reinvest and find other reasons for people to enjoy thems

[laughter] >> and i just want to say thank you, otis redding, for sparing us of that. one of the things so special about that song is it refers to otis reding's experience of coming from thousands of miles away. i suspect it is true for all the officials here, we all came from other parts of the country to this very sacred space called san francisco. and my guess is everyone here, you either came from somewhere else, or you are the child of the grandchild of someone who decided to pick up from another dock from another part of the world to be where we are today. and, in fact, over 160 years ago, this was the embarkation point for thousands of immigrants, particularly the first asian immigrants to this very spot. and i think it's very, very special that we are rededicating it as a community spa

monique griego has the latest on the new problem. >> good morning everyone. earlier this week a corrections officer was stabbed multiple times by an inmate. that officer later learned prison officials knew he was being targeted but never told him. corrections officers from north branch correctional institution in western maryland rally for the resignation of top prison officials. they say security leaders knew about a threat against two officers but never told them. monday one of the officers was stabbed in the ribs, head, and arms by an inmate serving life. it was the prison's 15th 15th attack on an officer in just 30 days. >> we just have a lot of bad dreams from something like this. you don't realize how hard it hits you until after it's said and done. >> the inmate made the threat in a letter to a prison official. in it he said i do run security in this prison. when i say move my men move. remove these two officers or i will take action into my own hands with body harm on those two officers. in a statement to wjz the department of public safety says the m

good morning, monique. why are merger deals so active? - we're seeing a lot of activity because interest rates are really low. you have these large buyers just sitting on a lot of cash, and they can get really attractive assets on very cheap prices, so this is a good time to really go in and strike now while they have the opportunity. - how does this year stack up to last year? - so far, being only about halfway through the year, the m&a activity in north america has nearly doubled all of what we saw last year. last year there was about $29 billion in valuation of deals, and this year so far we have seen already $55.7 billion in valuation of deals, and that's an increase of 92.1%. - is this a trend you think is likely to continue? - yes. i definitely think this is likely to continue through the remainder of the year, and we'll continue to see these large megadeals. competition is what's going to set apart one from the other in terms of looking at acquisitions going forward. that's why you saw at the deal between omnicom and publicis. they

monique griego is there with the latest in the investigation. >> reporter: today the task force gavee a list of recommendations. the task force said it did not find any deep rooted corruption, just a few bad people causing problems. a scandal involving a council member left the police department in turmoil. >> it became apparent that the problems within our department required swift actions. >> reporter: laura newman formed a task force to into into the problem. members included phil belfield. >> we did not see systemic problems we saw a distraction. >> reporter: instead belfield said it was a few bad apples. former county executive john leopold was conducted of misconduct. officers in his protection detail had helped him carry out his criminal activity. amidst the allegations, former chief james tier resigned. his replacement larry tolliver only lasted 10 days before stepping down. number one on the list was finding a new leader. kevin davis was appointed chief last month. >> all of the agencies suffer. this time around the police department suffered. >> reporter: other recommendati

neighbors monique and jana are familiar with the problem. they have been calling the city to pick up this large pile of garbage left in front of their building for a a week. >> this is just filthy. >> it's dis respectful. i would describe it as very disrespectful, very nasty, and not welcoming. >> reporter: oakland has one of the worst illegal dumping problems in the bay area. in 2011, it spent $3.2 million just to clean up after illegal dumpers. the city recently dedicated a team of lawyers just out of law school to go after the offenders. and within a month, they caught and cited a dozen people using videos and pictures that show the offenders' license plates. >> many of these people aren't even living in oakland. they're coming here, bringing their trash, and dumping it on oad. the citypeople to report ve this one here causing a mobile app called see, click, fix. you snap a photo, you send it in, and they'll fix it. making it easier to reporter the violators and going after them will cut down on illegal dumping, but it won't stop the prob
