now to nbc 10's monique braxton live on the scene. que. >> reporter: hi, moments ago we learned more about the two people that passed away. we're told both am employees with about 40 years of service. we should also tell you one person has been confirmed injured. just over my shoulder, you see dozens of emergency vehicles that have lined up here at 9th and langley. we've been speaking with passengers who have been checked out triaged at the united methodist church. they tell us they felt a jolt, a bang and a plume of smoke was seen. am track 89 was carrying 341 passengers and 7 crew members when investigators say it struck a backhoe that was on the track. the lead engine derailed. the train was heading from new york to savannah, georgia. right now am track service is suspended between new york and philadelphia. over my shoulder you see havertown emergency services have arrived. an ongoing investigation. monique braxton, nbc news. >>> we know crews out there most of the day. the conditions don't help. >> cold, blustery, expecting warm w

one of those people at the mall at the time was nbc 10's monique braxton.ur car was even searched as you were leaving the mall. is that right? >> that's right, vai and tracy. there was an incredible police presence here at the mall just after 7:00, i was in a line of folks leaving. police stopped me. i asked what was going on. they said a baby had been taken and they needed to search my car. they checked my back seat and then waved me on my way. if you're just waking up, we want to take you through what the scene looked like here at the mall last night. take a look at our video now. it was unbelievable, chaotic and, you know, it's something you will never forget. police were at every exit, leaving the mall. they were talking to people. we talked to some of those shoppers who had also been stopped by police. >> we're just absolutely shocked that that was happening here. >> that seemed to be the sentiment of everyone we spoke to last night. police were walking through the mall, the suspect seen on surveillance videotape leaving the mall with a 7-week-old baby

nbc 10's monique braxton is live at the scene. you've been out there for some time, you've been able to speak to investigators, what's the latest on the search for this gunman? >> hi, katy. crime scene investigators have been on the scene for more than an hour. we've been watching them initially with flashlights searching for evidence such as bullet casings and now with the light of day they're going to hopefully get a better look at what transpired on the street and what is left behind from the actual crime that occurred. investigators tell us they were called here to the 400 block of wyoming about two hours ago. we've also learned there was an argument between teens at the emergency cafe lounge. then a 17-year-old was shot in the chest outside. now, that teen victim was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital, he has passed away. i asked police about teens at the hookah bar and they told us they're trying to determine if there was a special activity going on. right now, a clear motive isn't known, but i can tell you we've

monique braxton live on the scene. monique, you just spoke with police. >> i spoke to chief inspector head of homeland security and s.w.a.t. officers. he told us right now a suspect he's been taken from 600 block of east westmoreland. the s.w.a.t. team and firefighters have cleared the scene. but this is still a very active investigation and here is why. police sources tell us inside the home are two men and one woman. some have gun wounds to their head, they are deceased inside east westmoreland. we're told one man was able to rundown the street. he's taken to a local hospital. in all four shot here in east westmoreland, three are deceased. homicide detectives on the way to the scene. we're told this incident began hours ago, about two hours ago, when shots rang out and residents began calling police. when police arrived, the gunman had barricaded himself inside the home but he was on the phone with a 911 operator telling them he was armed with a shotgun and there was at least one dead person here with him inside. poli

monique braxton is live on the scene. monique, you said most of the investigators and some detectives have gone to the hospital now? >> reporter: that's right, katy. when we first got out here no one was here but a few police officers from the 25 kt district then in a matter of minutes as many as a dozen officers descended on this neighborhood. they have since cleared the scene. they included detectives, crime scene investigators as well as the 26th district police officers assembling on the 400 block of wyoming. we spent a few hours watching crime scene investigators comb every inch of this scene for clues. the businesses here including the bar closest to the scene are closed down at this hour. the street was also shut down for a while. investigators were called here about three and a half hours ago. we've learned there was an argument between teens at the emergency cafe lounge. then a 17-year-old was shot in the chest outside. the teen victim was taken by a private streak a local hospital and within minutes he passed awa

that's where nbc 10's monique braxton is for us live this morning. d morning, monique. >> reporter: i'm along the parade route. philadelphia is doing something it hasn't done in almost eight years, host a parade for a winning sports team. you can see a few cars are still being towed from along market street. they're supposed to be off the street by 6:00. we caught a few still out here. the city of brotherly love is throwing a party for villanova's wildcats. this was the scene when the ncaa basketball team arrived back in town after winning the championship game earlier this week. mayor kenney immediately decided it is time for a full-scale celebration. skyforce 10 captured the staging being erected. in just a few hours, the team, university band and cheerleaders will step off at 20th and march towards city hall. after the five-block parade, a pep rally gets under way at dilworth plaza. villanova is paying an estimated $22,000 for the parade. that will cover police and ems staffing as well as cleanup. and the city is covering $6,500 for the bar years a

nbc 10 monique braxton is live on the scene. >> reporter: investigators are still here on the scene at north cherry road and kelly drive. still a very active investigation. you see firefighters, philadelphia police, also the philadelphia police marine unit dive team and just on the other side of that truck is the tow truck. they are trying to lift the car out of the water. in the past hour the person has been recovered from the river. witnesses tell police just before 3:00 this morning the driver who had exited southbound roosevelt boulevard on to north ferrari road drove right into the river. witnesses also say the person appeared to be speeding. we do not know the identity of the victim but we can tell you police say he is in his mid-20s. and right now they are trying to lift his body off of the curb there on the stone fencing that surrounds the schuylkill river. we're going to stay on top of this investigation, stay on the scene and continue to get updates from philadelphia police. live for now in east falls, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> we'll check back with you shortly. >>> a

monique braxton is at the mall.e begin with nbc 10's drew smith, outside upper merion township police where the suspect is being held. drew, walk us through what happened. >> reporter: tracy, right now we can tell you, that woman is still being held here. we're working to find out the exact charges she will face. let's go through this step by step. it was surveillance video from the mall that officers put out to the public shortly after the reported abduction around 5:30. then tips started coming in all at once. police figured out who she was and started checking locations where people had seen her. they moved from point to point in montgomery and chester counties, eventually find her and the baby at a home in tredyffrin township. when that news reached the dozens of the baby's family members here at the upper merion police station, there was a huge sense of relief. the family want to know what was going through the accused kidnaper's head and why she had to put them through this. >> the woman who was found with the

nbc 10's monique braxton live with the details. monique. >> hi, rosemary. as the memorial grows outside this house, that new information we learned this morning includes not om hat mother's boyfriend turned himself in, he told them he did strike accidentally while playing with the gun using a.45 caliber handgun the little girl will this is what we also learned. he turned himself into the district office 8:00 last night he told detectives he had the gun in his hand when he accidentally fired striking 4-year-old. police recovered.45 caliber semiautomatic hand done. we just learned that. our camera at eastfield shortly after the little girl was killed. sources tell us as many as seven children that's also new, were inside the home when the gun went off at 2:30 in the afternoon. initially police told us their investigation revealed a 5-year-old accidentally shot the child in the face. but we now know it was a man inside the home who fled the scene and turned himself into police last night. he has confessed and at this moment we're awaiting word on homicide char

nbc 10's monique braxton is at the scene and we will hear from her in our next half hour. >>> this morning, police are searching for an attacker who abducted a woman, duct taped her and raped her in west philadelphia. she was kidnapped around 49th street and lancaster avenue nearly 12 hours yesterday. nearly four hours later she was able to free herself. police say she escaped from a black four door car with a garbage bag over a rear window, which is a good description if you're out looking for it. neighbors saw the 20-year-old woman walking on the 20-year-old sidewalk, they say she was in rough shape. one witness told us his mom got a closer look at the victim. >> she said she saw a girl with bloody face, duct tape on her ankles. >> i heard screaming and she was like "get off me, get off me." >> the woman was treated at temple university and was released late last night. police say the man they're looking for is around 23 years old with dreadlocks and a long beard. new from overnight, three people are in the hospital after a car crash in philadelphia's bridesburg labor day. police say the

our team coverage continues with nbc 10's monique braxton, live at the mall with more on how that all-outinvestigation unfolded. monique, walk us through what happened. >> i was one of those people leaving the mall just after 7:00 last night when police stopped me at one of the exits. i asked them what was going on. they said a baby had been taken and quickly searched my back seat and then waved me on. we'll show you video of what other customers went through moments after the 7-month-old was taken from the food court at 5:45. police at every exit, stopping cars, checking them thoroughly, waving customers on their way. skyforce 10 was also over the mall, capturing the chaos. police were walking throughout the mall as well. the suspect was seen on surveillance videotape leaving the mall with the baby in her arms. twa hours later, an amber alert was broadcast on tv. the first one identified philadelphia county, the first one said chester/montgomery where the crime occurred and surrounding counties. after 9:00 last night, four hours after the child was taken, the amber alert signal was sent

nbc 10's monique braxton is live for us at special victims' unit with details on how the victim managed to escape. monique, what an ordeal. >> reporter: that's right, katy, we can tell you that the investigators here have wrapped up their talk with the victim. the next step would be to work on a composite sketch and possibly look for a surveillance tape in the area where she says she was abducted and tortured for almost 12 hours. >> i heard a lot of screaming and you know she was like "get off me, get off me." >> reporter: those screams got the attention of people who live near 57th and larchwood. our camera was rolling shortly after the 20-year-old victim escaped. police say she was duct taped, physically and sexually assaulted by a gunman believed to be 23 years old. the victim says she was forced into a car at 49th and lancaster. she tells police the black four door car had tinted windows and a garbage bag over a rear window. those who came to assist her were startled. >> makes you want to keep your loved ones close. anything like that can happen to anybody but when it's so close to

monique braxton is live with details. >> first of all, let us explain to you it is a three-step process to get those phone alerts out in pennsylvania. take a look at what we've been able to gather after doing some digging. local authorities first notify state police and they notify the national center for missing children and then that group pushes out the alerts from washington d.c. upper marion police chief said his department did what they needed to do quickly. >> the amber alert went out to all surrounding jurisdictions in montgomery county within the first few minutes. >> by 7:45 thursday night it took one hour to obtain appropriate information and pictures. their amber activation occurred at 8:48 p.m. now, with that activation, state police notify the national center for missing and exploited children in washington. that's the agency which pushes the button to send cell phone alerts. the cellular send process can take some time. it took 45 minutes on thursday. we'll continue to delve into what takes place prior to the amber alert you receive on your cell phone. we'll also hear mor

nbc 10's monique braxton spoke with the d.a. today about the events that allowed griffin to walk free. what did he say? >> reporter: hi there. the philadelphia district attorney said he has done some restructuring here. we've learned there is no longer a so-called gun court. the d.a. says he plans to review the facts of scott griffin's former case. >> we're trying to do all that we can every day to ensure that fewer cases are being discharged for lack of prosecution and fewer cases are being discharged for lack of evidence. >> reporter: according to court documents, lack of evidence or loe was the reason given when a gun case against scott griffin was dismissed on april 12th. we learned witnesses didn't show up to testify against the 23-year-old. griffin was set free even though he has a criminal history. now he's under arrest for shooting 18th district officer james mccullough. >> on the week after this guy was released on to the streets, he's accused of shooting a police officer and found with the weapon. >> we are very, very
