monique braxton is live at the scene with new information. fill us in, monique. >> reporter: for the past hour we have watched firefighters huddled outside discussing the situation. what we know is that at least eight people have been injured. something that's interesting is, you can see in the far distance to the back of that ladder truck, you notice that the montgomery county coroner has also arrived. he is taking pictures. we have not been told if anyone has passed away. we're still waiting for information. the fire chief has told us he will speak to us momentarily. but an hour has passed since we first learned that. the firefighters were called here about an hour and a half ago to a two-alarm blaze. one person suffering from cardiac arrest. as many as seven others injured. and right now we're trying to find the extent of everyone's injuries. we did speak to someone here on the scene who said a man he described as his friend was frantically trying to escape the blaze along with two daughters. we understand that the fire began on the third f

nbc10's monique braxton is live along the boards in a.c. y, monique. >> reporter: it is a beautiful, breezy morning here along the boardwalk. you can see just over my shoulder a few folks are out walking, taking a morning stroll along the boards as they call it. some people have also been on their bikes. we've also seen people jogging. this memorial day weekend brings a sense of renewed hope to a cash-strapped city. governor christie signed off on it. now atlantic city leaders have 150 days to figure out how they will balance the budget. one-third of the casinos, as you know, are now closed, yet shore-goers are optimistic. we found the financial woes are not keeping the crowds away this holiday. >> it's a great resort. grew up in south jersey. been coming here my whole lifetime. really hoping that things turn around. looks like they are. people have to be optimistic. >> reporter: and merchants we talked to tell us that 70% of their annual business will occur in the next three months. and by the judge of things here, just looking at folks alo

live for now from norristown, monique braxton, nbc10 news. >> thanks for that, monique.ou heard me mention that we are following three fires this morning. the third is in south philadelphia. we'll continue to keep you posted as soon as we learn new information on all of them. >>> in other news, we are finding out some new information about the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. nbc news reports that as many as six assistant coaches at penn state allegedly saw sandusky engage in inappropriate behavior with children dating back to the 1970s. also there are new revelations stemming from a lawsuit between penn state and the university's insurance company. a court order issued this week says there was an abuse or molestation exclusion in the 1992 to 1999 insurance policies. between 1992 and 1999 the insurance company would be exempt from paying settlements related to any sex abuse claims involving university employees. penn state would be responsible. we spoke to a legal expert who says the timing of that exemption to penn state's insurance policy raises questions. >> what's i

nbc10's monique braxton is live along kelly drive. filling us in on what's happening at this hour. monique. >> reporter: hey, rosemary. we're down by the schuylkill river right now where the doubles competition is under way. you can see that just over my shoulder as they're making off down the schuylkill river. we also captured this video of some heavy-duty cheering going on. it is day two. the semifinals are under way in the oldest and largest high school rowing competition in the country. more than 5600 athletes are participating this year. 984 boats will be in the water over this two-day event. athletes about to graduate in just a few weeks now have their very own competition for the first time this year. at the stotesbury cup regatta. it's called the petite finals. >> all of the schools out here. everybody is cheering everybody on. very positive attitudes. the kids love it. >> we took some boats up to the head of the charles in boston in october which is huge. but to have it in your back yard is a great experience. >> reporter: that good experience will no doubt continue in the

monique braxton is live at the scene, following this story all morning long for us. what can you tell u.s? >> just moments ago, the foerman says he is hoping for power to be restored in the next few weeks. we were able walk close to them a short time ag, and this is what we saw, half a dozen homes with shattered windows. the sidewalk full of class in that area. pico tells us the damage is because of the force of the under ground electrical fire. police and fire responded with them to sixth and pine streets. when they arrived, a cable was burning under ground. one worker recalls flames shooting from three manholes that lifted off of their bases. we spoke to folks that lived just steps away. >> we were awakened by a loud noise that made the house shake. we smelled shoek, heard the fire department coming, and we were awakened by the firemen asking to come check our house for carbon monoxide. >> we had someone staying here from california in the last couple days. and we said one of the reason we don't lose a lot of utilities is because they are under ground. so that is g

monique braxton has just gotten to the scene and she's gathering new information. monique. >> reporter: you can see that dozens of firefighters remain here on the scene as well as several fire trucks. there is a ladder truck now that is on top of the building enabling firefighters to see the extent of the damage and make sure that all hot spots have been doused. we have seen firefighters from several different jurisdictions, probably as many as three dozen here on the scene. eight people have been evacuated for a medical condition. we are learning also that one person was taken to a local hospital. here is what someone had to say frantically about the -- when the fire was warmed away. >> he was calling for help. i guess i was calling 911 and he was saying that his two daughters were in the building. >> who got them out? >> the firefighters. >> reporter: the extent of the damage as well as the cause of the blaze still is not known, but we're going to reach out to the fire marshal and have more for you on the investigation in the next half hour. live for now from norr

monique braxton is live where the racers have been heading out there. monique? >> hi, rosemary. if you're in need of inspiration and hope this mother's day then no doubt this is the place to be. just look over pink. i've been moved by the thousands that brought family and friends to walk or run with them. race for the cure was delayed by rain. when it got started, was it glorious? hundreds of breast cancer survivors descending the steps of the philadelphia museum of art to get the vent started. there wasn't a dry eye on the parkway. in the crowd of survivors. we found one ma who fought breast cancer twice. >> i detected it just a very slight little tickle in my nipple. no more than a little scratch on your arm or leg. i really didn't think much of it. i had a regularly scheduled appointment with my doctor for a checkup. we went through it and talked about all of the things, lose weight, et cetera. and he was walking out the door, we were done. and i don't know why, but something made me say, oh, by the way, i have this funny little tickle. he turned around, came back, gave me a

crews are working on a fix and monique braxton has been following this story. what a way to wake up on your sunday. >> yeah, and they have a big party planned on top of that. we learned that about 50 houses still don't have power, and we were told to move because we were too close to where manhole covers had blown up. we learned about 1:00 this important that pico police and fire were called here because of an under ground fire at sixth and pine. one worker told us that flames were shooting from the ground. the power company said as many as three manhole covers lifted off of their bases. >> when the lights in the house started to flicker uncontrollably all over the entire house, we thought something was wrong with the house. we found out it was the whole street, everybody's house, and then we found explosions. >> pico does tell us there was no explosions, but there was a fire. this power problem falls on the same day as the 38th annual society house and garden tour. ten homes were to be featured. i have e-mailed and placed calls to the society and so far i have

nbc10's monique braxton just arrived on the scene. monique, if you're there, tell us what you see and what's happened so far. >> hey, vai. i am here at the corner of the 100 block of southford street, and firefighters tell us they were called here about 10:20 this morning, and just moments ago, we sua person who had been trapped in the basement under the collapsed debris, freed. he was brought out by a paramedic and taken about a block down the street to an ambulance awaiting his arrival to take him on to be treated at a local hospital. let me take you back now to the scene here that is still in the 100 block of southford street. you see that there are dozens of firefighters on the scene. police have been here outside the tape, trying to keep this entire neighborhood away. this is what we know. we were told that the house was under construction. the first floor collapsed. and a contractor was trapped in the basement. still very sketchy details. investigation still under way. but for about an hour, at least, that person remained down un

monique braxton is live with how officers tracked him down. >> reporter: state police tell us they got a tip that anthony richardson, their suspect, resembled in composite sketch. he was arrested at his home this morning in overbrook without incident. any comment on the allegations against you? >> he was taken in on custody along with the vehicle and transported back to the pennsylvania state police philadelphia barracks. >> reporter: state police say a confidential tipster led them to richardson's home here in the 1300 block of pennington road. he matched a sketch. his lincoln town car with tinted windows matched the car involved in the road rage incident. >> the sketch artist cdid an a excellent job. >> reporter: the male victim told investigators he was run off the road near the knit and a shot was fired in to his car. >> the bullet penetrated the lower front passenger door. >> reporter: the state police also say they recovered handgun that was licensed to the 50-year-old suspect. we knocked on richardson's door, but no one answered. his neighbor says he's shocked. >> that's not the

monique braxton is joining us now from chester county. i know you spoke with the witness who actually called police? >> that's right. we did. the witness tells us his father-in-law was fishing in that pond, surrounded by american flags when he saw what he thought was a woman's body. >> i thought maybe she was stuck under a rock. >> reporter: little did jason rudder and his father know that the african-american woman was attached to a cinder block. that was hoeing her under water. >> that's even scarier. >> reporter: jason said what he saw, a topless woman wearing shorts, bobbing up and down in the current three to four feet out near this middle pipe is something he will all remember. >> silently shocked in a way. we left, i got on with my day, later in the day it hit me, like, this really happened in an area where me and my children just moved to. >> reporter: rudder said he was moving to this rural community from royersford with three school age girls. the authorities tell us people who live down the road often fish or swim in the pond t

viewers watched live as we followed the rescue start to finish on nbc 10 news at 11:00 a.m., and monique braxtonarrived at the scene in fact middle of the accident and is live now with a play by play for us. monique? >> reporter: jim, right now, you can see over the shoulder the home that collapsed is boarded up, the door is boarded up as well as the basement to keep people outside it. it was an incredible scene, though, when we arrived. firefighters attempted to rescue a man trapped in the basement of the row home under piles of debris. we had special operations to release the civil crawling through the front and the rear. >> this man was brought out by paramedics. he was trapped in the basement under debris for one hour. he's alert and conscious. going to the hospital for inspection. >> we learned the city agency had been working with the owner to stabilize and sure up the spouse. >> they were doing more to work on the roof and on the rafters and back wall. >> a lot of rain and snow going in the house, no roof, so that's not surprising to me. >> reporter: neighbors on both sides of the clapts

nbc 10's monique braxton is there. that woman took you through exactly what happened. >> absolutely. this is where it all went down. walking in the parking lot last thursday night as the sun was setting and says it happened so fast, she didn't realize a car was coming up behind her and the next thing she knew, someone yanking on her purse. >> such a shock. i'll never forget that pull. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview, the 65-year-old robbery victim says she feels violated. she relives her frightening encounter with the purse snatcher. i had blood all over my sweater. >> reporter: the victim, we're not identifying, says it happened so quickly, a man in a passing car grabbed her bag. she automatically held on, and dragged past two cars here at the gateway shopping center. >> a felt like a poom and flying with the pocketbook. >> reporter: she showed us bruises under her eyes, on her nose, chest and elbows. >> i hurt. >> reporter: police say two men inside a blue or teal car are responsible. investigators want you to

nbc 10's monique braxton joining us live, several st. joe's students part of the story. tell us about that. >> that's right. you can see over my shoulder, cars belonging to four students smashed up here, in 63rd and overbrook. you see the debris from two cars towed. damage happened as the dead driver crashed into parked cars. >> is this the officer -- >> all i heard was freeze, stop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: this is what they saw, bullet-riddled minivan. they learned an unarmed driver killed by police. >> one of my neighbors told me he was driving around looking suspicious and he took off and the police took off after him. >> reporter: police commissioner ross says they've received several calls from students here at st. joe's university. they were concerned about the driver of the mini man casing their neighborhood. 19th district police arrived they say the driver wouldn't pull over. >> they cut the male off of the vehicle, got out, told him to stop. he attempts to flee from them, trapping an officer between the car. some other area where he didn't feel like he could

monique braxton is following the stoi story for us, and seat belts were a factor in the crash? >> reporter: that's right, jim. we can tell you so much of this investigation remains a mystery. it's still very active. now, investigators are here trying to determine exactly why a car going northbound here on henry would lose control and veer into the southbound lanes. we've learned of nine people involved today, two of them have passed away. >> so you can imagine it was a horrific scene for the first responders. >> reporter: investigators say before 4:00 sunday, two offduty police officers rushed to the scene moments after the deadly accident. they could only do so much. three of the seven crash victims in the car that police say caused the crash were ejected. two women in their 20s seated in the front. >> two adult females up front were ejected from the vehicle upon the collision, and the little 6-year-old was ejected halfway out the back window, and that's the one who did not survive. >> reporter: the 6-year-old who died was one of the four children in the backseat of the car. a

monique braxton spoke with the victim's wife. >> i did. i couldn't help but have teary eyes listening to her. in the past hour, the septa can there was part of the accident scene has been removed. this is where molina was hit and killed, and investigators say it was raining this morning, but they believe the driver was speeding when he hit molina and took off. >> i'm in shock. it saddens me that somebody would hit my husband and just go. >> reporter: though surrounded by love of family and thneighbo, she would not wish this on anyone. investigators say the husband of 13 years probably didn't see this car coming when it mowed into him as he sought shelter from the rain under a septa canopy. he suffered severe trauma when he was thrown more than 120 feet. the canopy destroyed. >> he was a hard worker, always there for our family my family, his family, he was just an excellent funny, outgoing man. >> reporter: telling us the 50-year-old molina was awaiting a bus ride home from work when he was hit and killed after 12:30 working the late shift
