she was the sheriff of monmouth county at the time debra trout was the sheriff of hunterdon county.e. any typical case, we diligently acquired evidence over a period of time. at one point, we obtained a judge's authorization to conduct a search of both the sheriff's office and residences based on the cumulation of evidence. what's interesting about that and what's so important, that was the first finding by a neutral, detached magistrate that there was, in fact, evidence of wrongdoing that our office had obtained. that's the first finding. the second will be the grand jury determination. but in the midst of this investigation, we sent numerous letters to the attorney general's office saying there's a conflict here. we shouldn't be investigating another county law enforcement officer and moreover, we're dealing with systemic corruption. those requests were rebuffed. we never received any assistance despite these requests. that changed dramatically when the indictment -- >> as soon as you got indictments. >> as soon as we got indictments, boy did things change. >> i want to get your s

according to one from monmouth university, his approval rating in new jersey has dropped 6 points since last month to 59%. nationally it looks like the scandal has barely made a dent. in a new poll, 60% of americans say their opinion of the governor has not changed. 16% say their opinion is less favorable and 6% said they see him more favorably. we're waiting for the governor to speak. we'll take that live first. eric? >> reporter: we're waiting now for governor chris christie to walk into the general assembly chamber here at this historic state house and he will likely face his future. interesting to see what kind of applause he gets ferk gets a standing ovation or just light applause. he is expected to address the bridge scandal right off the top of the speech. some of the democratic legislators in that crowd have been accusing his administration of engaging in a cover-up over what happened at the george washington bridge and they doubt his denials that he didn't know anything about the staff supposedly being involved until it was published in a newspaper last week with those e-mails.

his popularity ratings were obviously very high as you even referenced in the monmouth poll today. but the reality is there's something that has piqued the interest of the federal authorities to dig further here and go beyond just an inquiry and to look at what they are considering a full-blown investigation. >> and of course former democratic governor jim mcgreevey appeared in some tourism spots in 2004 with his, now, ex-wife and daughter. i want to go now back to the bridge scandal. new investigations into the whole bridge gate controversy scandal. the assembly already released 2,000 panel pages of documents. nothing indicating christie knew directly. do you know of a smoking gun? is there definite proof christie knew of this? do you believe there's one to find? when does this end? >> well, there's no proof that the governor had anieniny knowl of this. all we have is his statements that he knew nothing about it. he did not know about it, in his word, until 8 oomp:50, the morn before his press conference. i think what we do know is we had two people resign from the port authority.

monmouth university, new jersey residents poll. approval of governor christie in december, 65% approved of the job he's doing. that's now down to 59%. it's only a six-point drop. not that bad. look at this. you have a favorable impression of governor christie. a year or so ago, 70% said yes. down to 44% now. that's a pretty significant slip. >> yeah. it's a very significant slip. and i'm sure it's troubling for the governor's staff. if you look more at these polls within the state of new jersey, a couple other numbers pop out. only half of the -- about half of the people say he's not being completely honest about all of these controversies, which goes to the very important trust question. any leader has to have the trust of the people he's going to lead. and only 44% believe, and this is people in the state of new jersey who watch him every day, paying close attention to this. only oh 44% believe that he has the right temperament to be president of the united states. that's very telling. and, again, this temperament issue is very i

the local one, monmouth university, january 10th through the 12th, favorable opinion on chris christiew 44%, down from 70% in february. so a big drop there in his local popularity, with 89% of new jerseyans paying close attention to the scandal. and in the past few days, has your opinion changed, the vast majority saying they haven't changed opinion. so not much movement there. but what does this say for his chances of surviving the scandal and, in fact, continuing to become possibly the republican nominee in 2016? >> well, look, what's taken a hit here is the chris christie that he wanted to present nationally. and look, right now the audience he really cares about, he cares about local new jersey audience, because he wants to get stuff done in new jersey the next few years. but he's starting to court the national republican audience. and the story he wanted to tell to them is, he's a different kind of republican that can attract non-traditional voters and that even though new jersey has this reputation as, frankly, a state that's full of corrupt politicians, he's something different.
