avalanche last week in montana. benjamin hirsch- mcshane was backcountry skiing in the tobacco root mountains, when an avalanche hit around 1 - oclock last friday afternoon. he was part of a group of four people from california and utah. the group was reportedly climbing a slope in a heavily treed area, when the avalanche occurred. two of the skiiers were able to grab on to trees and escaped injury. mcshane and another skiier were carried away in the avalanche. the other skiier was hospitalized with injuries. a funeral service for mcshane will be held in denver on thursday, with another service planned for a later date in san francisco.
