i want to bring in sean spiller, the mayor of montclair. mr. mayor, thank you for being with us.hose pictures we saw from your township just stunning when you think of what the basements all across must have been like. can you give us an update on where things stand this morning? >> first, thank you for having me on. thankfully, like we heard from our governor that you just heard in the previous segment, we did not see loss of life in montclair so we're thankful for that. but as you see from those images, these are people's lives, these are people's homes, these are people's vehicles, people who have been traumatized with car rescues and literally getting people out of their homes and apartments. this is real. this is not something that we should be experiencing, this is the new normal with climate change. our residents were deeply impacted and something we have to keep preparing for in the future. >> that is good news at least in your community that no deaths reported. what's the biggest remaining danger this morning? >> right now we've still got crews out taking up the remainin

christine, you are in montclair, new jersey. what is it like, is your basement flooded right now?ig garbage cans full of water my kids pulled out last night. that shop vac never worked so hard. and when you talk to people here, they all say their basements are flooded. and people who live around here, they measure what has happened in their house based on what hurricane is. floyd was bad, of course sandy was terrible, irene was not great and this one is record-setting in terms of the amount of water people are dealing with. i'm just over the border into clifton and the cars behind me are not parked here on the street, they ended up here from somewhere else. and that has been a real problem here. these streets became rivers and cars were just being washed away. the fatality we know in this county was an elderly passenger in a car, the car washed away in a street that turned into a river and firefighters couldn't get him out. the firefighters were washed under that car, that is how much water was rushing down those streets. so just that tragedy there shows from you 7:00 to midnight

what are you seeing there across montclair. >> the difference with sandy was more about coastal floodings and power outages. the suffering had more to do with the long-term that the power was out. what we're seeing is much more inland flooding and places that don't typically flood. >> what about rescues? how fast did this happen last night? >> incredibly fast. alerts go off and you don't have enough time to react. we had over 50 car rescues in the town alone. we still have cars stranded on certain streets. we've had basement rescues from things flooding. store employees, restaurant employees in the restaurants downtown at the time the water was approaching the building and coming through and risings and they're walking out and they can't get the door open to get out because flood water is pushing them in. i met with business owners this morning, some of them in tears in my arms. it's just awful. >> what a lot of people don't realize is the next day it's just mud everywhere that you have to now get out of the way. >> absolutely. mud everywhere. people store stuff in the basement. we have r
