monte francis was in that courtroom today. monte, what's the holdup in that case?>> reporter: defense attorneys have been claiming they need more time to review evidence nnls case. today they told the judge they are making progress, but as you said, it's been 19 months since garcia torrez was arrested and today in court there was yet another delay. wearing a tan suit and with his hair slicked back, anton garcia torrez entered the courtroom and through his attorney refused to enter a plea that he kidnapped and killed 15-year-old sierra lamar in march of 2012. his public defender told the judge the defense is still sifting through evidence in the case and is close to being ready for a preliminary hearing but wanted more time before entering a plea. although prosecutors say they have dna evidence linking garcia-torrez to the crime, lamar's body has never been found. about 20 to 30 people still take part in weekly searches for her. about a dozen of them were in court today. >> of course it's frustrating because we're not getting the information that we need to go out a

monte francis joins us and this is the same area that had another hay juror fire a few weeks ago. >> raj, that's right. this fire burned for about four hours this morning and there is a smoky haze in the air. the fire department is still here on the scene working on hot spots and pg and e is working on power lines. this is the third industrial fire in the area in recent months and that's raising questions and concerns for people who live nearby. the fire started just before 6:00 this morning ripping through a machine shop and spreading to three nearby buildings including an apartment building. 17 were displaced. a firefighter injured one hand in today's fire. nobody else was hurt. it took more than 100 firefighters four and a half hours to get the flames under control. a huge plume of smoke slowed traffic and made it hard to believe. the office of emergency services issued an alert warning people in the immediate area to keep windows closed and avoid going outside. >> it's just safer to stay indoors, but it has not reached the level of an alert where everyone has been orrered to shel

monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> now we turn to rob mayeda for the cold weather hitting the midwest and east coast. we got a taste of it with the 49ers today. >> it was lucky they didn't have to go into overtime. we're looking at the low of minus 24 and that is in the cold sector of the storm where the snow is flying across chicago and detroit. still mild on the east coast for now but as the cold front passes the eastern seaboard we'll see a huge plunge, subzero hyighs for green bay and detroit. for tuesday, upper teens and 20s and new york. and you don't ee this often. the low in atlanta georgia dropping down to 7 degrees. this subzero air will filter into the midwest. we'll see flight delays into chicago because of that due to icy conditions and many more on the northeastern corridor. that's going to be the story into tuesday. this cold snap will stick around for a while. our own weather is the exact opposite. we came close to breaking record highs today as highs did get close to 70 degrees. we'll talk more about that and shower chances in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes.
