turning to our climate in crisis, a lab in monterey county could be the key to saving a vanishing species of starfish. the sunflower starfish has been decimated by disease, and now an engineer is hoping to repopulate the endangered species by growing new ones. arianna araiza reports from moss landing. it's a rare sighting of the sunflower sea stars here on the central coast, and an even more unique setting. a disease called sea star wasting syndrome killed off most of its population from the open waters in western america back in 2013. pretty much just liquefies them on the spot, and it can take from anywhere from a couple of days to much longer. and that's problematic because sea stars are a key predator in in kelp forest systems. in other words, the loss of this predator caused purple sea urchin numbers to explode, allowing them to feast on the kelp forest. a second factor also at play. a marine heat wave known as the blob, impacting the kelp forest, upending the ecosystem even further. our studies estimate anywhere between 55 and 70% decline in kelp forests and up north. the estimates

stunning and rare sight in monterey bay. you are looking at a pod of up to 80 offshore orcas that whale watchers spotted yesterday. the killer whales usually spend their time in the deep ocean, but marine biologists believe a large amount of food in the bay is drawing them inland right now. scientists say it's been three years since the last time they saw this many offshore orcas, this close to the california coast. i love seeing that vianey. i recently saw a video of dolphins as well in southern california. yes. that's fascinating. maybe they like this weather. i'm going to dive deeper into that. but, you know, we've still got some rain up in parts of the north bay. you heard about that flood warning. and i'm going to tell you even more exactly where we're seeing it. so let's get right to that microclimate forecast so i can show you what we're seeing on radar right now. now, if you notice, that system is still kind of far off to the north, but if i zoom this in a bit closer up through parts of the north bay, we're still see

the coast guard has been scouring the waters about 45 miles off of monterey, looking for the 72 yearbay area's terry mcsweeney has the latest on this developing story from san francisco. tonight, the ruby princess. more than three football fields in length to part san francisco en route to hawaii, leaving behind the mystery of what happened to one of its passengers overnight. a 72 year old man boarded the ship last wednesday when it began its five day round trip voyage to ensenada, mexico. the return included a stop in san diego with arrival in san francisco about 7:00 this morning. but the ship was one passenger short. princess cruises released a statement saying in part. cctv footage has also been extensively reviewed and the ship was searched thoroughly several times without success. having ruled out other possibilities, this is being treated as a man overboard incident. the coast guard confirms it has dispatched a c 27 search plane like this one to an area 45 miles off the coast of monterey. it's unclear why they are concentrating their search in that specific area. there are app

so we've got and at half moon bay and obviously monterey bay. bay area impacted by that tsunami warning. not sure what that's going to mean for any of our coastal communities. but we know that there are alert systems in place to let anybody in low-lying coastal areas know that this tsunami warning is in effect. you probably want to get away from the coastline just in case. but again, this epicenter was off shore. so there will be some water action as a result of this. probably most strongly felt closer to the epicenter up near eureka. but certainly we may see some higher than usual waves here around the bay as that tsunami warning does encompass the coastline from that epicenter all the way down to san francisco bay and at least down to half moon bay, potentially down to monterey bay. but it doesn't look like the monterey bay itself is included in that. >> usgs just upgrading this earthquake to a 7. so that is a recent update that we did just have as well. of course, you're what we're seeing with the tsunami warning this quake was centered offsh
