we're live in monterey county. i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> all right, chris, thank you. >>> a number of restaurants in santa rosa are dealing with damage today caused by gusty winds and heavy rain. powerful winds last night tore down tent coverings used for outdoor dining. it happened just two days after rules were relaxed in sonoma county and people could eat outside again. in the east bay many residents felt the impact of the storm first thing this morning when they woke up to no power. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has that part of our story. >> reporter: in the east bay the overnight deluge and wind storm left its mark as the rains gave way to relative calm by morning's first light. like the downed lines that left some residents starting their day without power. >> early in the morning big flash. i could see out my bedroom window. then the power went out. and it's been out since. >> reporter: pg&e crews were out in various neighborhoods trying to restore power due to dozens of small outages throughout

look at what happened in monterey county. bay area based emergency responders are there where a mudslide in one burn zone area damaged homes and other buildings and that drama played out early yesterday in south salinas. we know now two people were injured as they were trying to escape that wall of mud. dozens of horses had to be rescued and some two dozen homes and barns were damaged near river road. firefighters went late into the night sandbagging to try to divert that water from a home near the path of the slide and one property owner says he dug a trench through the back of his yard and that helped to avoid the worst of it. >> i don't know if it saved the house but saved a lot of damage. this is the most water i've seen come at once. >> residents are hoping that the stalled atmospheric river starts to move south like some forecasts are suggesting. you know, kari is watching that. >>> happening now the flash flood watch is in effect in the santa cruz mountains. thousand of people in the burn area were ordered to leave the

tonight bay area fire crews are helping after flows of mud and debris damaged 25 buildings down in monterey county. two people were hurt trying to escape. dozens of horses were rescued. a multiple roads are closed. let's bring in nbc bay area's ian cole who has amazing video near salinas. >> reporter: tonight teams of first responders are deployed throughout monterey county. oakland and alameda county firefighters pre-positioned here, responding to damage caused by mudslide, placing hundreds of sandbags to divert water from a home in south salinas. more than 25 structures were damaged, sons of mud slamming right into homes and barns in the overnight hours. >> on river road, the mud itself is pretty thick and deep here. this all came from the fire zone up on the mountain, down to the base of it right here. it is now a muddy and watery mess. a wall of debris hit this home and two others right behind it. two people were hurt trying to escape. 50 horses had to be rescued. this charred tree sliding all the way down from the river fire burn scar. a nearby rancher heard the thunderous mudslide around 2:3

crews are working with the property owner's in that area to assess all the damage staying in monterey county. evacuation orders and warnings were issued there yesterday for parts of the county strike teams of firefighters from fremont, oakland, hayward and alameda county fire departments are in salinas. right now, they were put on standby to help if there were any more mudslides or even flooding. the storm did slam the santa cruz mountains very hard overnight. the wind and rain hit the boulder creek area, especially hard emerge. the officials in santa cruz county say they were worried about the risk of debris flow, mudslides and flooding and some of those burn scars from this easy, you lightning complex fire that burned this past summer. went oil become burned. to that extent it no longer absorbs water once those mudslides or debris flows start. you can't stop them. there's nothing you can do to stop it. and once you hear it, it's probably too late. half inch of rain was actually reported in just 15 minutes, right near that burn area. any people spend the night in hotels in neighboring commu

you can see just how hard the rain was coming down in monterey county, flooding and mud flows of caused damage to at least 20 homes. today people who live in the south salinas area went back to check on the damage and in some cases get horses that were trapped in their stalls to higher ground along river road. you could see thick piles of right in front of homes covering cars. when is this going to end? 2021 was supposed to be a little better, and so far, this is just it's relentless. we just can't catch a break. we were so amazed. how quickly way saw boulders rolling down the middle of the road, and it's just an eye opening. ah flash flood warning is in effect for the scar areas from wildfires in monterey county last year, the fremont fire department posted this video of flooding along river road crews were deployed along with other bay area firefighters ahead of the storm yesterday. their assignment today was to provide damage assessments on homes in the burn scar areas. let's go now to our chief meteorologist, bill martin. he's tracking the rain forest. yeah. and what we're watching
