we are following developing news out of monterey county. mandatory evacuations are underway and highway 1 is closed this morning. thank you so much for joining us, i am kira klapper. we'll get back to that breaking news, first, let's check in with vianey arana tracking our forecast. over night there were some high winds, could those cause problems for those fires? >> we have seen significant win speeds down to less than 10 miles per hour. some of the wind advisories in e i effective for the east bay hills. we are still seeing those gusty winds. as far as the ig sur area goes, yesterday we were focusing on the offshore wind event, a lot of smoke were going off into the ocean. today we'll see a shift. the national weather service released a 24 hour peak winds. look at mount diablo, 71 miles per hour and oakland at 60 miles per hour and half-moon bay at 55 miles per hour. i will talk more details of advisories and your extended outlook come up. >> vianey, we'll see you about 15. >>> happening now more than 5,000 people in berkeley and piedmont

so we did have that tsunami advisory in effect for santa cruz county and even monterey county. those have been allowed to expire. so now it's on the central coast coastline all the way from san luis obispo county into santa barbara county. wouldn't be surprised if that will begin to expire within the next half hour to hour or so. and that's going to remain in effect through tonight. dangerous rip currents review could get swept out to sea because of the strong forces out there from that volcanic eruption. so great news. we are noticing improvement with that. that advisory allowing to expire little by little throughout the california coastline here at home in the bay area that expired about half an hour ago and future cast for tracking some changes in the extended outlook for the 2nd half of your long holiday weekend. we are seeing increasing high clouds for your sunday morning and afternoon going to remain dry, even though we're starting to see some showers in monterey and santa cruz counties as i speak, really just light drizzle, if any most of it is evaporating known as virga.

breaking news now out of monterey county, where large wildfires broken out. this is video from the national weather service. you can see the smoke and flames there. the fires burning along the big sur coast and palo colorado canyon. authorities are asking people to avoid highway one south of carmel. there are evacuations in place for people who live in the area. cal fire says about 20 to 25 acres of burned so far winds in that area are around 35 mph. we'll continue to monitor the fire and bring you the latest information as we learn it. right now, negotiations are continuing to avoid an oakland teacher strike over pandemic protocols, the oakland teachers union said a midnight deadline for the school district to put additional covid safety measures into place. ktvu jana katsuyama has been in touch with the union and joins us live tonight with an update. janet well. earlier the union president said that as long as there was any kind of progress, they were willing to stay at the bargaining table as long as it took even into the night to try and get a deal done.

every fall, monarch to fly start to make their way to monterey county to ride out colder months beforeve on for mating season. you have.dustin dorsey with they from pacific grove. reporter: nestled along the monterey coast, a natural beauty you can only see for a few more weeks this year. to witness it, you have to look up. every fall, monarch butterflies make pacific grove there -- their winter home. >> last year was zero, and the year before that was 650, and the year before his 800. every year is different. this year we have a peak 14,000. reporter: last count, 9511. around september, monarchs make their trip to monterey county because of the perfect conditions for the butterflies. a cluster together through the winter but today we had incredible views. >> i encourage people to visit, it is an incredible time to come -- sorry, there was a burst. we get sometimes hundreds of monarchs that suddenly leave a tree enter flying. oh my goodness. if you come, you might witness something like that and it is magical. reporter: people come from across the globe to visit the monarchs. i had not

how north bay valleys, interior monterey county as well. bright and dry through the weekend.e high clouds of sunday and then a return to the wet weather into monday and tuesday. our coastal flood advisory through 10:00 monday, these are the king tides that have returned in the low-lying areas you can see from the bayshore down through san francisco and up through marin county. maybe minor coastal flooding. here's what we can expect today. sunshine throughout the 10:00 hour. we are thawing out and warming into your sunday. the afternoon is sunny, a few high clouds throughout the day. this is over night to early monday. you can see spotty, light showers. as we get to monday afternoon, not a whole lot out there. then into monday night, still shower activity. we will take this all the way to about january 8 or ninth. you will notice most of the rain is to the north but we still pick up over a half-inch in santa rosa and hopefully in san francisco. the storm track does look to shift slightly north but a lot can change between now and then. at least we see a return to some rain. hi

you can see how more of that smoke has been hung up around monterey county. that should be generally less of a factor over the next couple of days as the activity from that fire continues to trend downward. but notice a trend here in terms of the fog. it's already setting up across the sacramento valley and the san joaquin valley to the east. so very likely solano county, inland contra costa county, some of those north bay valleys, you will see some of that patchy fog for the morning. it will be a chilly start. 30s and low 40s for those inland valleys for the morning. by lunchtime, dress in layers. you'll be back in the 60s for areas south of downtown san jose. mid-60s again around san jose. but upper 50s, we think, san francisco to oakland as the sea breeze comes back. that's going to start to cool things off a little bit along the coast and the inner bay. bigger changes we think will develop once we get past friday. you see the seven-day forecast still looking pretty mild. the first weather system approaches on friday, but kind of falls apart there near men

developing now, a wildfire and monterey county continuing to grow this morning and it is forcing evacuations. the colorado fire broke out last night. cal fire says that fire has grown to 1500 acres. the flames jumped highway 1 last night. the road a shutdown in both directions. >>> parts of the bay area are under a high winds warning. the because gusts are expected at the peaks of hills and mountains. it will continue until later today for higher elevations. with that, here is a look at our full forecast. >>> this will go until 11:00 this morning. wind gusts up in the 30 and 40 mile per hour range. we have already seen wind gusts stronger than that. i know it looks red on the map but it is a high winds warning and not a red flag warning. a red flag warning is specific to fire concerns. we are not looking at that because of the nature of the landscape. it is not an immediate fire thread. here are a couple of notes of interest. we have had one peak, and isolated peak will up a love town that is gusted into the 90s in the last hour. it is really isolated. in general, this is the speed that were

developing news out of monterey county. a rare winter wildfire is earning just north of big sur. it started in colorado canyon. emergency crews shut down 21 miles of highway one in both directions. there were evacuations of about 500 residents. they will shelter at carmel middle school. >> people are working to get out of the area. we know fires are unpredictable. any of the road leading up to highway one are narrow, tree-lined. we won every one to be safe. >> this fire is being called the colorado fire. it has burned at least 2.3 square miles. flames jumped highway one and could be seen as far away as pebble beach. it is 40% contained. shifting to the weather, are we done with this windy weather? >> it is winding down. we are not quite done with it. winds have died down significantly. here are some peak wind gusts. 86 mile per hour guests in some areas. -- gusts in some areas. the strongest when at calistoga with 40 miles per hour. even in the hills they are contained by the bit. we will continue to see winds into the overnight hours. but we are almost done. i will have the full
