that didn't happen until montgomery and alabama. besides voting rights, that march led to other issues. there's economic justice as well as social justice. and we are working in that -- in those areas. access to education, housing, and health care, and more. have not been available to all. dr. king in his famous speech in new york at the river view church talked about not only racism but mill tarism and materialism. and there's still problems in this world today and problems that affect this congress when too many times we do work on military solutions rather than peaceful solutions and we worry about materialism rather than spiritual goods. we worry too much about people who have and not people who don't have enough. that's part of dr. king's dream and that's part of the legacy that has not been fulfilled in this country and this congress needs to do more. that's why jobs bills are so important to give people opportunities and job training bills that we are working on. so it was fortunate that we had this opportunity to participate

the montgomery bus boycott happened in 1955 and 1956. the little rock and virginia school desegregation crisis. martin luther king had emerged as an important figure yet it is also noting how little had changed by 60. six years after brown school desegregation was hopelessly mired in the courts. fewer than one in 1000 african-american students attended an integrated school in the south. the number is actually closer to probably one in 5000 depending on how you define the south and how you calculate what an integrated school lives, but the point is that brown had receded extremely slowly. enthusiasm for the montgomery was what caught had dissipated or go in many ways martin luther king was lost in drifting. is because her-- cover shows he was the most famous african-american and he had trouble turning the success of the boycott into a kind of enduring movement and progress seem to stall out. many worried the civil rights movement such as it was that stalled out or was in danger of falling apart. i think the best way to illustrate this is

some of eisenhower's biggest problems were not with montgomery, they were with bradley. so he had his hands full. these were all generals with ideas of their own about how the war should be one. so one of his challenges as the supreme commander was to try to juggle those things and still follow what he believed was the strategy that he felt had to be legal to do this. and he made a lot of guts decisions. i talked about one of them very briefly. another gutsy decision that i made was in december of 1944 when he realized how desperate the situation in the battle of the bulge was and he decided to split the front and give the northern half to montgomery and there was howling. my god, you can't do that, you can't give that to them, so on. edison, they're has been a lot of written about it. but if you go -- if you go to the generals that fought the battle in the northern half goebel -- of the bulge they will tell you it was the right decision and having montgomery there probably saved their lives. you talk to the people the defendant for example, the u.s. seventh armored divi
