so my experience, as a little mini feminist, i arrived here in montgomery county with a copy of time time magazine that had a breakdown of title ix law. and i marched into the principles office and said, hi, i know my rights, i want to play soccer. i'm a bad half back, but i want to play. that's what a lot of this is about. you don't have to be a talented, elite athlete. you have the right to play badly. so i demanded the right to play badly when i was 14. and i thought if i had access i could get better. there's a thought, right? okay. so let's say schools all around the country have several years to be in compliance, which represented lost time for someone like me who may have become a better athlete. it takes quite a while. and then by 1975, regulation goes into effect this says, yes, schools have to address the athletic opportunities for girls. okay. so what is that going to mean. well, schools are given a set of criteria, but then they are given three more years to be in compliance with what the criteria are. now basically, three ways that you can be in compliance with title ix.
