there are wonderful books about jefferson and monticello. she talks about sally hemmings and she talks that slavery and she does it in just the right way. authors of children's books are really on this i think at a doing a very, very good job in school districts -- school districts, if legislators would get out of the way and let people really do care about children and not about trying to indoctrinate people and not trying to harm children anyway. let them do their work. i think people, these stories can be disseminated and put out there because there's a lot of really, really good material. >> and i think i will just add, i was a high school english teacher for a few years before went to graduate school, and there are some websites and some organizations that are doing really wonderful work, lesson plans and syllabi and classroom resources and scaffolded inability to an age-appropriate way. sofas in education project, like howard zinn, facing history and ourselves, teaching for change and then it used be called heat intolerance but now it

she first joined us in 2008 a couple of weeks after the publication of the hemmings' monticello and an american family went on to win pulitzer prize and the national book award. she was there for the biography and later shared the stage for the co-author work most blessed of the patriarchs, thomas jefferson and the empire of the imagination. annette gordon reed is the professor at harvard university and her honors include the humanities metal and macarthur genius grant and frederick douglass prize. in her new book the texas born historian examines her own past vis-À-vis among the lone star state routes. in the shimmering review in "the new york times," jennifer's praised the book for the author's ability to combine subtlety, questioning her own assumptions and showing the historicalie understanding is a process, not an end point. tonight annette gordon reed will be in conversation with broadcast journalist and longtime friend of the author event series. it's great to have you with us tonight. the screen is yours. >> guest: >> host: as andy mentioned, this book has gotten rave reviews.

his award winning landscape designs can be found internationally at mount vernon and monticello, sun dance square, washington university st. louis and across the seas at the visitors center. i was lucky to meet michael in his role for the washington cathedral garden grounds where he's provided counsel on the maintenance and upp keep on this historic acreage. one of the guild's major projects was to -- a 5 acre woodlands at the base of the cathedral. michael was chosen to be the architect for the amphitheater located there. the amphitheater was part of the original design by frederick olmsted, jr., and so the realization of this beautiful piece was one of the most exciting aspects of the project. now, michael, has just taken two of his three triplets, the two of three different colleges for their freshman year, so it is no wonder he is interested in campus design. we look forward to his presentation. >> thank you for that. and let me say first it's a great privilege and pleasure to be with you here today. i'm going to talk a bit about our work on three projects, three olmsted campuses

. >> i just want to monticello as well. >> we are not erasing him from our history. >> there is an issue. who gets to decide who is honored, and where? that is our next topic. because, when you appeared on history as it happens podcast, fairly recently, actually and july, around the fourth anniversary of the unite the right rally, the confederate statues did come down, i think in august, i take that back. the confederate statues came down in charlottesville, general lee, and jackson. our discussion, really, is why certain narratives gain ascendancy, and why, we, today, believe certain narratives, or believe a certain version of history, instead of, say, a different, more complete, or revised version. i think the issue of the confederate statues, is arguably, the best one. as a yankee myself, going down to washington, i'm a mets fan, and i'm a yankee, i guess, but i moved to washington d.c. and decade ago, and i noticed, over the river and alexandria, there is still streets, and roads, named after confederate. i was confused as to why that would be the case. and, within charlottesville, t
