we hear a lot of these days, the past few decades about moral decline and america, moral decline and the world. covers a lot of areas. not clear that those are always the most relevant areas to what we might consider public morality. bill bennett made a career out of talking about moral decline. lots of radio talk shows have that as the common theme. most days there is an opera in the washington times decrying moral decline in america and indeed i saw a poll recently that said three quarters of americans think we are in a period of moral decline. so it seems convincing but there isn't argument that we are in an era of moral progress and i think more people are starting to speak on this side of moral progress and economic, tangible progress in the world. as i point out in my own forthcoming book libertarian mind, we have seen a reduction in the world of war, slavery, violence of all kinds, we have seen a tendency toward individual rights, economic freedom and democracy, those are important elements of progress including moral progress. a new issue of cato policy report, the newsletter

we are going to be talking about both by supervisor wiener during roll call on the passing of bob morales. i was very shocked to hear that. he was the first person i met her coming to city hall. a great person, incredibly sad to hear of his loss on a personal level but also for the teamsters as well. then also to back up supervisor cohen and wiener on their hearing around police staffing levels. i look forward to participating in that as well and i will be looking forward to cosponsoring it. it's an issue of crime. not only do we have homicide and supervisor cohen, an amazing comment that we've had since we started this meeting a few human resources ago. what i have heard from residents in my district. time and again over the last years it has increased in violent crimes and neighborhood crimes. this issue affects us all maybe different ways in our districts but it affects everyone of us and police staffing levels is something that is right for discussion here at the board of supervisors and inside of city hall. i think public safety i imagine is going to be a huge priority for a lot of u

book, called "the theory of moral sentiments." maybe the greatest self-help book you have never read. what i try to do in my book holiday how adam smith can change your life" is give you a window smith's psychology, economics, and apply them to modern life. what i want to do tonight is give you an idea of what adam smith can teach us about ourselves and the world around us. i want to start with a story. i was in london last week -- it's been this year for sure. and it was kind of a whirlwind trip. never been in london before, and i gave a talk at a place called the royal society of arts. the royal society of arts is very old. used to be called something like the royal society for encouraging manufacturing the arts and commerce and enough it's just called the royal society of arts and the goal is to encourage creativity and ideas and it's a wonderful place and che have speakers and i gave to talk. and before my talk i'm in a room off to the side and they put out things to eat and drink couch and a couple of chairs, nondescript room
