senator moran. >> thank you, chair. doctor, again thank you for your presence and leadership at nsf. let me begin by talking about -- you mentioned in your testimony about the development of new directorate and you did so in excitement. the budget proposes 880 million for the continued establishment of the directorate which is now about 20% of the total amount that's being requested for research. it is nsf balancing the creation of the directorate while preserving its basic research foundation? the bed rock of the work as a mission and should i, should we be concerned that it will change the direction and undermine the basic research needed to enable us to reach the goals? >> a very good question, senator. thank you for asking the question. if you look at the directorate, some of the programs, let's look at the innovation the entrepreneurship program with the partnership for innovation which is also a program at nsf, some of them end up being focused on the concentration of science ideas into the market that has been ex

he helped to fund thomas moran's trip as did scribner's. and moran really wanted to render. yellowstone and full color because of course, this is the advantage that painting has over photography. jackson's photographs could give you a really good sense of the rich detail, you know, the sharp lines of all of these elements of yellowstones amazing natural structures, but moran could give you the color right? so here are two of his watercolor sketches that he made he made both pencil sketches and watercolors kind of in the moment and then he went back after the survey to produce versions of some of these in oil some of them that were actually going to go directly to jay cook to help pay him back. so moran was really captivated by captivated by a lot of the sides and yellowstone, but particularly the view of the lower falls from the canyon rim. he and jackson spent several days on the rim sketching and taking photographs and moran even was so excited to start on this painting which he called the big picture that he returned home early from the expedition to get to his studio int

let's go to terry moran at the court.nd terry what did you make of what the white house is already signaling tonight? >> reporter: well, david, justice alito says that's not true. he says in his draft opinion that this ruling should only apply to abortion, because the profound issues it raises. but the problem is, the way justice alito overrules roe versus wade that has president biden and many legal scholars alarmed. alito says that unless a right is specified in the constitution or deeply rooted in our nation's history and traditions, it doesn't qualify as a constitutional right. and scholars say there are many things we think of as rights that weren't around when the constitution was written, not in our history. there weren't a lot of gay marriages when the constitution was written, contraceptives were illegal. and they say that alito's argument could cut those rights down, no matter what he says, if someone brings a challenge to them. and they note that the last time the republican party wrote a platform in 2016, it c
