middle class americans are spending more and more of their income on rent. and a majority of renters with incomes below the poverty line spend more than half of their income on housing. now, we have a lot more -- we have to do a lot more to raise incomes and i've outlined some of the ways that i will do that, including the national minimum wage should go up to $15 per hour, and expanding the earned income tax credit to provide a bigger lift to working people. but that's just part of the lution. to tackle the affordability crisis, we also have to offer more support to renters. rental assistance, like section 8 vouchers, is an important way to do that. but today the system isn't working for many of the people who need it most. most families who are eligible for a voucher don't have one. so they spend years and years on waiting lists and some of those lists are so long they're closed entirely to new applications. but the fact is the vast majority of people on section 8 waiting lists will wait and wait and never get the help they need. that wait falls heaviest o
