joining us now is nbc news correspondent morgan chesky live from norman, ohio. can you tell us about the damage you're seeing there? >> reporter: yeah, the damage is extensive. a terrifying note for so many oklahomans, seven reported tornados across the state, two in texas, and you're getting a glimpse here, jose, of the damage left behind. a tree is toppled over across this entire area like match sticks, and as we walk up to what's left of this building, you can see just how powerful these winds were. jose, if they were not outright tornados, we're talking about straight-line winds topping 100 miles an hour. that alone capable of knocking down what was this horse barn here. fortunately, i spoke to the owner. they tell me no horses were injured, a small miracle as she huddled down inside a bathtub as this storm hit under cover of darkness, but jose, this was a fast moving storm. we know that people were warned with tornado warnings, and they were told sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 in the greater oklahoma city area is when this storm would roll through, and it

nbc's morgan chesky is in austin to tell us how a potential disaster was apparently averted. cond decision that likely saved lives but unfortunately it's just the latest example of planes barely missing each other on runways, this time right here in austin where a pilot's training and cautiousness is being credited for averting the potential catastrophe. this morning, federal investigators pouring over a close all at austin international airport. it happened early saturday when a fedex cargo plane was making its approach in heavy fog. >> confirm, 32, clear to land on 18 left. >> fedex looking heavy, affirmative. >> reporter: according to the faa, the cargo plane was cleared to land on the same runway as a departing southwest airlines flight that had just been cleared for takeoff. moments later, you can hear someone, not yet identified, on radio traffic between pilots and air traffic control tell southwest to abort >> southwest, confirm on the road southwest, abort fedex is on the go >> that response, the faa says, is the fedex pilot, cutting his landing short, pulling the plan

morgan chesky reports from the hardest hit city, norman, oklahoma. morgan? >> reporter: yeah, it's going to be a tough day for so many oklahomans. we're here in norman that took the brunt of the overnight storm. seven tornadoes in oklahoma, another two in texas, the damage unmistakable. you can see this car was picked up and hurled against this home. the roof ripped off behind me. you can see damage on yet another home here, debris scattered in every direction. unfortunately there's going to be more damage now that the sun is coming up. officials say 12 people were injured in the norman area. none of those injuries appear to be life threatening. a terrifying scene under the cover of darkness, spanning 100 miles an hour winds in certain areas, and the multiple tornadoes. at last check, more than 10,000 oklahomans still in the dark as a result of this storm. up and to the north of us in michigan, people are reeling from a power crisis from a storm that happened last week. 100,000 people without electricity in frigid conditions there. hard to believe so much sp
