and it happened between morgan hill and san jose. about 11 miles north of morgan hill. here at the ktvu news studio we did feel it. it was a slight rolling if you will. almost hard to tell whether it was an earthquake because it was so slight. but we are probably about 50 to 60 miles or so from the epicenter. joining us now on the phone is epinhimer from the geological center. what can you tell us about this earthquake. >> the earthquake happened in the calav era s fault. it's a very active section of the fault. it's pretty close to where the morgan hill earthquake of april 24, 1984 occurred. that was a magnitude 8.6 earthquake. it's a fault that has a combination of stuck patches that fail in big earthquakes like the 1984 earthquake and there was one more recently back october 31st 2007. and then there are these little patches on the fault that creep and with smaller stuck patches holding up the motion and they occasionally pop up in magnitudes threes and fours. >> i'm sorry, i was wondering is a 4.1 enough to cause any damage? >> no, not at this depth. if it was right

it happened south of where we are in morgan hill. according to the u.s. geological survey, it was felt as far north as san francisco an as far south as king city off highway 101 and big sur off highway 1. the quake hit shortly before 1:00 this morning, precisely at 12:51 a.m. the usgs reports it measured 4.5 on the richter scale and hit 6 miles southeast of san juan batista. that is in san benito county 45 miles south of san jose. neighboring cities include hollister, prunedale. the hardest hit areas are san juan batista. the epicenter was 5.2 miles deep. on the map this is denoted by the blue box on your screen. now, it did hit on the infamous san andreas fault. at least 15 aftershocks have been recorded, most of them small, measuring 1.2 or 2.9, but a 3.4 aftershock did register about 1:00 this morning. so far, though, no reports of damage, but certainly some rattled nerves. we've spoken to a few people who felt it here in morgan hill, including a woman who says living here, well, it's all par for the course. >> we live right here, san andreas fault lin
