the spillway released from anderson reservoir will not lead to flooding in morgan hill, according to water officials but approaching storms could cause problems down stream where coyote creek flows through low lying parts of east san jose. >> there's areas around kelly park area, there's some low points there, some possible parks and roads that could be flooded first. >> reporter: saturday morning anderson reservoir crested over the lip of its spillway, fell in the cascade toward coyote creek. we don't see water like this every ten, 20 years. to see it flowing. we came up here to see and we got our are show. >> reporter: the reservoir since morgan hill has not held so much water between 2006. the contrast of january 2016 and this month on the right. there's another reason why so much water is being released. the dam is considered vulnerable to a 7.25 magnitude earthquake. it is required to be kept only 68% full because of that. water officials say it will take four to nine weeks to draw down the level at that point. >> it's just a physical reality. it is what it is. we started releas

let's get to "abc 7 news" reporter matt keller live in morgan hill. matt. >> reporter: kristen, really crazy out here in morgan hill, especially for the last hour and a half, two hours. check this out. this giant branch sitting here in the tree. then i want to show you something here. check out these power poles. apparenly a tree or something happened where it went into the line and knocked these power poles over, causing a huge mass of power outages in the whole neighborhood. started a fire in a house as well. pg&e is here on the scene taking care of power issues, but, yes, this is not the only damage here in morgan hill. the wind had its way with this tree that crashed into the middle of cochran road. crews were busy trying to clear it away so commuters could get to highway 101. less than a mile away these two giant trees were pushed over in their giant planters on cochran road as well. then over on east main avenue, this tree crashed into the middle of the road. so windy and so dangerous. >> leaning. >> reporter: then several power poles pushed ove

because we have more than enough water here in morgan hill. check this out. just checked the water level's website and anderson reservoir is at 99% capacity and that's why they're doing this, getting all that water out but while they do that, it causes another possible issue, flooding down the coyote creek and this is what it looks like when it gets a little swollen down there. a number of low-lying communities close to the floodplain so there is a risk they could flood. the refb war is supposed to be at 68% capacity because of seismic concerns so water officials need to get it below that level to make it safe in case there is a really big earthquake and with the rain today and over the next couple days anderson reservoir could reach full capacity. at that point, the water will be spip spilling over the top of the dam into a concrete spillway designed to relieve pressure. only one reservoir out of the ten here in santa clara county is currently spilling b others are above 90% and that includes anderson here in morgan hill. reporting live in morgan hill, matt

people watching what is happening here in morgan hill. the concern is of course with more rain in the forecast, that dam could go over and the water could pure over the spillway nearby. the officials from the water district have been dumping water as fast as they can into the reservoir. it is not enough to offset the rain we have seen come down in the last couple of days and weeks. the outlet here fully open since january 9th, dumping 400 cubic feet per second. the concern of course is the dam seismic safety. it could cause an earthquake on the nearby fault. i talked with the water district. they say although that earthquake is a remote possibility, it is one of which they're very aware and they're taking every precaution to get the water oust the dam. at last check it was over 99% capacity. could top 100% capacity at some point in time today. the retro fit is three years away. we are keeping an eye on the water level here as they are dumping water out of anderson reservoir into coyote creek. the concern for neighbors of course is that it
