meteorologist sayaka mori is back with details on that. sayaka? >> yes, southern california is also dealing with severe flooding. there is a tropical storm named linda over the sea and this is feeding ample moisture from the south. the flash floods are taking place. we have some video coming out of california. take a look. severe weather has taken the life of at least one person in southern calornia this week. heavy rain and hail has been running in san bernardino tuesday and wednesday. this is leading to flooding in local rivers. one man was swept away in the ters. a flash flood watch remains in efct through thursday. more weather is expected. this area has been dealing with lack of precipitation, so rain is very needed. but too much rain is not good news. there's another big story for this area. temperatures are extremely high. it's more like mid-summer. los angeles, the high could hit 36 on thursday. and sacramento, you'll see 40 degrees going into the next couple of days. now, across europe, severe flooding happened across the southeastern por

here with more is sayaka mori from our weather desk. sayaka? >> yes, james. tropical storm etau made landfall this morning. it was the first named storm to make landfall so far this year. typically the yearly average is three. so this year's typhoon season has been active. the center has pulled away from mainland. japan, so it's clear over central portions of japan including the toku region. but rains are lingering over the kanto region. we have video coming out of the area. heavy rains and landslides are all in effect. tokyo was battered by 320 millimeters of rain for the month. several trains have been suspended. and three high school students were struck by lightning and got injured. the storm itself was not too powerful, but because there's a lingering low pressure system or front, so rainfall has been significant. now, the heaviest rain fell in amagisan prefecture. over 400 millimeters of rain has fallen. hamamatsu, nearly 400 over the past three days or so. so rain is causing flooding and landslides in many portions of the country. the center has pulled

sayaka mori joins us now with the weather update starting with conditions people in flood-stricken areas are dealing with. sayaka? >> conditions are improving across the tohoku and kanto region where rain is taking place. but the amount we had was extreme like nikko had 500 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. we had a low pressure system over the sea of japan. it brought humid air from the south. mean while we have a storm over the pacific. it brought humid air over the ocean. so it collided over japan that caused significant rainfall. those systems pushed up north. so heavy rain this morning. now heavy rain is pushing to the north. the tohoku region saw record rainfall. for example, sendai, 240 millimeters rain fell in just 24 hours. that's much more than a monthly rainfall. in fact, one-fourth of the annual for this region. and in osaki, 167 millimeters in just 24 hours. rain is moving away from the tohoku region but now parts of hokkaido are dealing with the rain. this is packing wind gusts over 120 kilometers per hour. believe it or not, it has been over the waters for three weeks. it f

sayaka mori joins us with the tropical storm that has been impacted parts of japan. sayaka? >> yes.here's a seasonal frontal system over the country and an top of that, a tropical storm is approaching and it's bringing moisture to the front. extreme rain is falling in many areas. we have some pictures coming out of the area. this is hamamatsu where there was a record-breaking number of rain for this region. and 300 millimeters have been reported since sunday. 150,000 people are adviced to or forced to evacuate in the city. several roads are flooded and landslides have been reported in this place. well, there is more rain coming up for the next several days because a tropical storm is approaching feeding ample moisture to the front. this is the track for tropical storm ato. the system will likely move up to the north. it could intensify to a severe tropical storm because of sea surface temperatures being warm enough to support the system and the center will likely reach the key peninsula by wednesday noon local time. and then move up by thursday afternoon local time. strong wind gust
