ktvu tara moriarty just a run down the scene. joins us on the phone with more on how this may have started with a kidnapping. tara. >> reporter: we are off river road in guerneville where there is a heavy law enforcement presence here. we're being kept several hundred yards back from the crime scene. a deputy told me there is so much evidence to process here. there is a very wide area quarantined off. last night around 11:00 there was a kidnapping. we have heard reports that a woman texted someone. she was being held hostage in a car. she was able to provide the vehicle description. they spotted the car. a high speed chase began for a half hour. it led sonoma county sheriffs deputies through sebastopol and ended in guerneville. he ran through a gate and damaged several properties and ended up in a ditch. the rumor is he was shot and killed but authorities will not confirm. meanwhile we understand the female victim in this case is physically doing very well. live from guerneville i'm tara moriarty. >>> time now 5:02. we have devel

ktvu's tara moriarty is live on 8th avenue near morago with some pictures that show how marijuana mayave had a role in this fire. >> reporter: well, the good news, the firefighter is okay. he suffered a possible dislocated shoulder. his own crews transported him to ucsf, but behind me is the house where you can see he fell inside there and crews stumbled upon something else inside. heavy smoke billowed from the roof of this home on 8th avenue near noriega street. >> it was an interior attack, offensive attack. we went right in and directed our hoses in the fire. it's a bit windy. the homes are all attached and wood frame. >> reporter: we watched one firefighter being let out on a gurney. he slipped on stairs. it's what the crews found upstairs that caused them to call police. >> i guess in the neighborhood, you know, smelling something different. don't know particularly the smell but definitely something different. >> reporter: firefighters say at least 100 marijuana plants were inside, an elaborate- growing operation an all three floors with a drying room on the floor. >> oftentimes

tara moriarty is on the scene and has more from the residents woke up from early morning alarms. >> reporter: firefighters are on the scene here but most have left. if you take a look over here you can see there are char marks coming out of the side of the building. that is when crews first arrived they noticed the flames and it quickly spread to the unit next door here on third. about two dozen people now out of their homes. two buildings with flats. the flames broke out just before 1:00 this morning. residents said they heard the alarms going off and people pounding on their doors. >> it was balls of fire. just going up and up. and pyres popping and just flames. and then scooted over to this one right here. and we look around and it's like a whole other house on the side just flaming out on the side. >> reporter: two firefighters received minor injuries. one hurt his knee and elbow. another suffered smoke inhalation. investigators are trying to figure out what started it all. >> right now it's under investigation. took pg&e gas awhile to get out here. they eventually mitigated that. this b

but they say many are still contracting tuberculosis tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. the number of tb cases in san francisco has jumped 20%. that was the figure from last year. 20% higher than two years before. so obviously a concern to officials so here at city college they wanted to get the word out that tb anywhere is tb everywhere. today, this morning, the city department of public health did free testing in honor of world tb day which is sunday. the last time we saw a spike the cases in san francisco was in the '90s when doctors say the funding cuts and the a.i.d.s. epidemic led to tb ed having. tb is spread from person to person through the air when a person from tb cuff coughs. some people develop the disease that even with treatment can be deadly. >> california reports the most tuberculosis in the nation. we have more tb cases than the two next top states, new york and texas combined. every four hours in california, we have a new californian diagnosed with tuberculosis. >> reporter: now, we spoke to one man who was diagnosed with the disease last year. he say
