morse, who is better known for inventing the telegraph. but before he was a telegraph inventor, he was a frustrated artist. he'd never quite made it. but this is a famous painting, which now is in new york at city hall. so the difference here is that in america, lafayette has always been seen as a unifying symbol of political virtue, whereas in france he has been attacked from both the political left and the political right. the people on the right view him as a traitor to the french nobility and the french monarchy. whereas people on the left have always said he'd betrayed the workers. the popular revolution, and was too close to the king. so the other thing that the one thing that both the left and the right in france have agreed on is that he was a kind of weak leader who was more concerned about his own popularity than about the real issues of the day. and we can come back to that issue. the french have often criticized lafayette, as in effective leader. but i think it's more interesting to note how lafayette became a romanticized poli
