>>> good morning, welcome to mosaic. i am rabbi eric wise and honored to be your host this morning. we are engaging about a wonderful new initiative called a year of civil discourse. it is a year talking about israel and all the different aspects of israel. joining us now are rachel, a professional mediator and abbey, associate director of jewish community relations council. this is a wonderful initiative cosponsored by the jewish community federation san francisco, marin and sonoma and northern california board of rabbis. unusually when i am mostly the host i am president of the board of northern california board of rabbis and that way am excited to engage in the discussion. welcome rachel, aaron and abbey. what is year of civil discourse? why focus on israel is this. >> we are excited about this this project because of a controversy that brewed within the jewish community. we are often tapped -- most of our work is looking at community relations outside the jewish community. the way it dials outside of israel, signals to us we need to focus building bridges within the jewish commu

>>> good morning i am hugh burrows, welcome to mosaic. this is a program about the sikh faith and people particularly in the bay area. it is our honor to be joined by the chair of the sikh foundation of palo alto. welcome sir. >> thank you. >> good to have you here. let me throw something to you. i know -- how do we begin -- how can you help us begin to understand the sikh people and sikh faith. >> we will be happy to do that. it will take a little while to talk about various aspects but i think we can refer to origins of sikh faith if you like. 500 years ago our founder of sikh religion, the first guru of the sikhs said there will be one god he called him kar. only one god. god is described in many different ways but it is the most mono theestic religion around. no difference between man and god. you can have teachers that will help you, but you can reach god through your teachers, directly. no intermediate necessary. god is defined -- always has been. always shall be, sole creator without fear without anonymity, forgiving and of course

there was a beautiful wood laid mosaic. this is a marble mosai c. this is at the national zoo. and there's the beautiful rock work. they didn't build porto potties. this is a restroom in yosemite. we discovered these above phoenix. then there's art work which celebrates people doing ordinary but indispensable stuff. this is up at timber line lodge. they were not used to seeing them or getting classes in journalism. they would get people in trouble. sometimes the art or the artist got in trouble. let's look at a few of the structures around california. this is built by the wpa. the noblist motive is the public good. imagine anybody saying that today. this kind of work is a noble endeavor. county courthouses like this one in alameda. city halls all over california in a variety of styles. this one is at burbank. it hasn't been touched. fire stations all over the place. and police stations and armories. this is the police stables in golden gate park and public libraries. and then one at north berkeley. public hospitals. clinics and sanitary. as well as polio people did get tubercul

a couple of years ago i had funding from an oakland based foundation to do a n mosaic project. i had done a project for the school 2 years beforehand. we had the money and i couldn't get the principal to meet with me for a 20 minute meeting. i meet with the principal and some parents and the chosen teachers one or 2 teachers and we will start a project. i had the money. they didn't have to come up with the money. i couldn't get the principal to meet with me. one of my murals was up in their school. i told the secretary said we am lose the opportunity. i got the teacher who sounded like this was dumped in my lap. can you work with 400 of our kids. >> no only 40. i couldn't get her to return a phone call. i went to the funder and said if i can't get the people to sit down and meet with me when i'm bringing a 10,000 program to their school. they said as long as it's in the same neighborhood and works for the same population and i did i called another principal. she met with me at the meeting. this is true. the principal was there. 2 teachers and 2 parents and members of the pta we
