we will be back here on mosaic in just a moment. >> host: welcome back to mosaic. i am rabbi eric weis and i am welcome to be -- i'm happy to be your host. we are here with the senior rabbi of -- of rodef sholom run by stacy friedman and we are here with joann foreman. many people think that mental illness is the domain of the psychiatrist and they don't talk about a psychiatric episode or mental illness. they think that -- or, they think it is in the political realm advocating for public policy. so, why the synagogue?>> that's a great question. one of the things that the synagogue uniquely offers is that this is the place where the whole family resides spiritually and they reside and spend their lives there throughout the lifecycle. so, we see families cradle-to- grave and beyond. we see people for multi- generations. we see people at their worst times and their most joyous times. the fact that people live their lives as part of the congregation means they can bring their full cells and that is important to us. if somebody goes to the psychiatrist or psychologist

this is mosaic and a special program about father time and youngsters. father time happens to be arthur friedman. good to see you sir. art is a longtime resident of the bay area and a real strap -- joy and treasure. we are pleased he comes on this program. let's just start in this new year. tell us about how you were born and when you were born. >> i was born in east oakland in november 28, 1922. and, my earliest memories are of the family just trying to get by. there were 4 kids, of which i was one. i was the baby of the family and i had older sisters. i got a lot of stories about how mother and father used to be going -- growing up and how it was different when i was growing up. i can remember my dad coming home with a bunch of grocery bags in the backseat of the car filled with food, and he would say, don't asked me for thing, i just spend five bucks on groceries.>> host: and this was during the harding administration that you were born. what did your father do for a living?>> well, he immigrated from russia in about 1900 or so and he made a living li

. >>> welcome back to mosaic. our guest today is professor kevin starr , author dasher author of the book, continental ambitions. let me ask about your title. you say in your introduction there are many fine histories of catholics in north america with a regional and historical perspective. it is a larger perspective, why did you adopt it?>> i adopted the larger perspective because it was adopted by two strong catholic civilizations in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. new spain and new france had to a smaller degree, the catholic colony of maryland. i wanted to adopt that because i wanted the mixture of approaching the continent of north america, it turns of exploration, settlement and in certain cases conquests. and in certain cases, terrible behavior toward native americans. then the other side was submerged and sometimes surfacing in that was evangelization. coming into this new world of north america and bringing catholic peoples there and encountering the indigenous peoples and trying to create a catholic c
