the last time san francisco had an interim mayor was 30 years ago, when, in 1978, george mosconi, was assassinated by supervisor dan white. >> both to grow rather mosconi and harvey milk have been shot and killed. >> they needed a new mayor at the time. the board got together and appointed dianne feinstein. >> we did not have much to go on and looked at 1978. there were no hints as to who put it on the board, if any discussion occurred about a process. >> what triggered san francisco's search over 30 years later was gavin newsom's election to the office of lieutenant governor. >> i put myself up as a candidate for the tenant governor, won, thanks to the overwhelming support of the city. >> that is when we try to look for someone to take over his final year of the mayoral term. >> it is clear we have to do something in san francisco. we have to pick a mayor. that job was not up to the voters but the board of supervisors. by a majority vote, supervisors are able to choose the interim mayor. that is when the fun began in city hall. who would he be? >> we needed to protect -- perfect the

we continue to upgrade our mosconi center and work with not only the traditional hotels, but they arepdating. i want to go to every hotel that updates themselves because you will see they are catering to the visitors coming here. we still have a great tourism industry in san francisco. we have wonderful hotel venues for all of them to visit, and then, the great international hotel -- international airport we have. you will see how our international visitors marvel at the efficiencies of getting through customs. it is great. i have seen a lot of other countries. i have been there when they have gotten there baggage, and you see that line, and you come to san francisco's international airport, and there is no lines. people are zipping through, and even some of the customs agents will say, "huanying," because they know the language. we are an international city. we want to maintain the world class feeling we always have. i really want to thank hilton for this additional work that it is doing to maintain that world- class status. so you welcome the chinese visitors for business or tourism

know the history from, labor history, hit the history, history of what happened in 1978 with milk, mosconi. but i wanted to be a part of its. >> what got you involved in politics? >> i had been involved in politics for decades. i was doing work around central america, supporting people in central america, protecting against u.s. imperialism, and their right to live. i was doing a lot of work on campus in college. head of work against apartheid. i was involved in a lot of the efforts to push back on efforts to remove affirmative action, prop 209, all kinds of work around ballot measures that were tough, big ideas, like single payer, but i never got involved in supporting a candidate. i never thought that a candidate would be someone that i would support, but when tom and ammiano ran for mayor against willie brown, somehow, i got inspired. i thought, it someone that has integrity and honesty, that comes from the community, could run for mayor, maybe it is we something that can represent the community. i wanted to look at it from a candid perspective. >> when you did run for the border superv
