the best example is the town of mossville which is an industrial community just west of here. they were established in the 1830s from freed slaves who might have had other lives and careers in other parts of the south but came here or escaped here. because this was a place where they knew their masters would not come for them because there was no protection. but after the civil war just like the rest of state, we faced reconstruction. and what happened in reconstruction for us was that the northern entrepreneurs came here. in fact, we call them michigan men in lake charles, because they came primarily from the state of michigan in order to revive and invest in the lumber that was here because they knew there was still plenty of lumber, long leaf pine and cypress that was available to be exploited. so the heyday of that post-civil war boom was then. and that, that was a time when there were 28 saw mills in lake charles, the railroad came through, and we had an exponential increase in the way the city grew. for a lot of people, the big change in lake charles being a 19th century
