our report from ron mott. >> reporter: today at the "cut loose" salon, they cut 2 x 4s instead of hair. leveled by sunday's tornado, the building is already undergoing an extreme makeover. just four days after being sheered bald to the floor. building darren collins wasted little time getting started on his honey-do list, raising new walls at his wife's old shop. >> there's got to be a starting point somewhere. we can stand around and stare at it or roll up our sleeves and jump in and start trying to take care of what's going to have to be done. we're coming back here, this town is coming back. >> reporter: he's got the time and workers, he says, because it's been a slow construction market. >> it's going to be one board at a time. i like to think we have a little jump on things. it's going to get chaotic around here in another week or two, not that we're not in the middle of chaos right now. >> reporter: and with good weather, he hopes the doors reopen in 45 days. of course, rebuilding the other 2,000 or so homes and businesses thought to be destroyed here will take a lot longer. hist

nbc's ron mott is in memphis, tennessee, with the very latest for us.st as we stand there at what looks like a beautiful day. >> reporter: it's a beautiful day. good morning to you. one thing we just learned is that they are stopping barge traffic on the mississippi. this is a thoroughfare for a lot of interstate commerce. that may be the last barge to pass through here over the next eight days. officials say that because they displaced so much water some of that water is going up and around the floodwall behind me here in memphis so beal street where it intersects with riverside is flooding. we're about 45 feet at this point. record was set in 1937 which is 47.7 feet. when it crest on wednesday, it will be below that. any rain between now and wednesday will threaten that record. folks don't want to see that happen. we've seen flooding in the communities to west of downtown. harbor town taking on water and mobile home parks near the city. officials are going door to door in some communities where waters are coming up quickly to get those folks out of th

nbc's ron mott is in memphis, tennessee, today, where the water has reached the downtown area. ron, tell us what you're seeing there. >> hey, there, savannah. good morning. take a look at the headline of the "memphis commercial appeal." field of streams. a beautiful photo of all this water flowing through and above and beyond the mississippi river's bans. pretty pictures here but messy pictures on the ground. beale street, which dumps out on riverside drive about two blocks back, has taken on water because the storm drans are full. they dump into the river. the river this morning at about 45 feet. they're expecting it to get close to a record next wednesday. the record here is 48 feet, seven inches. about 2,800 homes and businesses are in that threat zone for potential flooding. if you're familiar with memphis, harbortown, just west of downtown memphis, has already taken on water. there have been some evacuations there. the concern going forward, the towns along the mississippi south of us, they are getting prepared for what they believe will be record flooding there in about t

. >> msnbc's ron mott is in mississippi this morning.are marveling about, how much damage was done in seconds? >> reporter: in seconds, alex. the headline in the paper here, ten seconds to cause all of the damage. it's very widespread here in town. this was an ef-5 tornado, and that's the strongest classification for tornadoes. they estimated the width of this tornado half a mile. it will be a while before folks can begin to think about rebuilding. down here they started to put in new power poles. and there are very few others that are still standing. it's not just trees on power lines, but the power lines themselves and the poles are gone. they have to reinstall power poles and main lines into town. it will be a long time before power is back on here. there are homes back behind me to the south and east that did not suffer any damage, so those folks are without power and probably will be for sometime, so it has affected them as well. they found two victims yesterday, and one just in this area where this church was destroyed on wednesday
